In our inaugural At Home sale on Thursday 1 October, we are pleased to present the collection of the late esteemed decorative artist George Oakes (1927-2017) and his wife, Judith. Housed at George and Judith's home, Surrenden House, for over 40 years, the collection reflects Oakes’s distinctive eye as well as his era of collaboration with the iconic John Fowler.

A former director at Colefax & Fowler, Oakes was a key but quiet influence in the development of the English Country House style. Having led the firm’s fabric, wallpaper, and carpet design studio from its inception in the 1970s until his retirement in 1993, while also running the paint studio and undertaking commissions for murals, floors, painted furniture, and lighting, Oakes made his mark on some of the most distinguished interiors in Britain, Europe, and the United States.

Since his death in 2017, Oakes has remained a much-admired personality in the continuing story of the design house Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler, having been an important influence and inspiration on the house’s distinctive decorative language.

From 8-17 September selected works from the collection will be on view in a specially curated window by Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler at their shop on the Pimlico Road.

SALE ANNOUNCEMENT | On Tuesday 13 October we are delighted to be presenting the sale ‘Going for a Walk with Andrew Allfree’. Andrew Allfree is a collector and designer who has built a life through travel and objects. His interiors and collections form a kind of autobiography, shaped by years of travelling, observing and living. His approach is instinctive rather than doctrinal, guided by an unusually responsive eye and a willingness to look beyond conventional ideas of taste.

The title of this sale derives from a portrait of Andrew Allfree by Howard Hodgkin, ‘Going for a Walk with Andrew,’ painted in 1998 which is now in the collection of the Walker Art Centre in Minneapolis.

To know Andrew’s taste is, in a sense, to go for a walk with him: there is no fixed route and no strict hierarchy between the ancient and the modern, the grand and the humble. What matters is curiosity, the unexpected object, the arresting colour, the beautiful surface, or simply something that feels right- it is both accessible and infuriatingly inaccessible at the same time!

Taking place tomorrow, our Art & Interiors auction offers a varied selection of furniture, lighting, carpets, paintings, sculpture and works of art - everything you need to help create a cosy interior for the changing seasons.

For a period study, this early 18th century walnut bureau has wonderful colour and patination. The fitted interior features drawers and pigeon holes, providing useful storage. Alongside sits a petite étagère or whatnot. Unusually compact in proportion, it comprises five tiers, offering space for books, journals and small objets d’art.

Complete the look with decorative pieces, including sculpture by artists such as Charlotte Mayor and Rosalind Stracey, as well as prints and paintings, including this handsome horse portrait by Susan Crawford.

Opening our Fine Silver & The Art of Dining auction is a fascinating collection from the estate of Gertrud-Adelheid von Ehrenberg, heiress to German industrialist Hermann Köhler.⁠

Presented as a wedding gift in 1911, the collection of porcelain, silver and glass was carefully preserved through two World Wars and the dramatic political changes of twentieth-century Germany, before passing through generations of the family.⁠
⁠
Today, these objects offer a remarkable insight into the life, tastes and history of a prominent German industrialist family.⁠

In an incredible display of the family’s dedication to preservation, shown here is the invitation for the wedding of Gertrud Köhler and Otwig von Ehrenberg in 1911, alongside an image of Gertrud.⁠
