Highlights include sparkling and mature Ch*****nes such as 1990 Krug (Lot 3); bountiful Bordeaux with a Magnum of 1988 Mouton Rothschild (Lot 44); as well as a very special and sentimental collection of Domaine Meo Camuzet (Lots 148-171).⁠

For opening or ageing there are exceptional finds such as 2015 Tua Rita, Redigaffi (Lot 267) and Vega Sicilia Unico in both a 2004 vintage (Lot 282) and a 2006 vintage (Lot 283).⁠

With a new film adaptation of ‘Sense and Sensibility’ arriving on screen this autumn, attention turns to the elegance and refinement of early 19th century fashion.⁠ From Neoclassical silhouettes inspired by antiquity to the popularity of Kashmiri shawls, fashionable dress during this period reflected a changing cultural landscape and the influence of Napoleonic France.⁠

These styles were captured in the portraiture of the time, such as this portrait of Madame Philippe Panon Desbassayns de Richemont (Jeanne Eglé Mourgue, 1778–1855) (Lot 269), offered in our upcoming 19th Century Pictures & Works on Paper auction. Ahead of the auction, we explore the portrait’s significance, the fashions of the Napoleonic Era and the elegance of French high society in the early 19th century. ⁠

Tomorrow’s auction of Modern & Contemporary Art offers ‘Rivière dans la Campagne’ by Bernard Buffet, a wonderful example of the artist’s distinctive landscape painting (Lot 92).⁠

Characterised by stark, angular brushstrokes in greens and blacks, this lush landscape contrasts with Buffet’s more familiar winter scenes, drawing the viewer into its richly textured foliage and thick impasto. Devoid of human presence, the composition conveys a sense of stillness.⁠

The Shortlist: The Historic Houses Collection Award | Harewood House

Harewood House in West Yorkshire is one of England’s finest 18th century country houses. The House contains a collection of fine and decorative art, Chippendale furniture, Robert Adam interiors, British landscape and portrait paintings, French and Chinese porcelain, and Italian Renaissance paintings. Harewood’s collection contains a broad social history collection including rare items that reflect Harewood’s unique place in the world, from its time as a globally connected eighteenth-century country seat to becoming a Royal Household in the early 20th century.

Over the summer, the judges Jasper Conran, Alice Loxton, Dr Xavier Bray, and Will Richards visited Harewood House. Here, Alice tells us more about the history of the property and the collection.

Italian sculptor Cesare Lapini was active primarily in Florence, where he became known for his allegorical and mythological subjects, as well as his interpretations of antique sculpture. He exhibited at several important Italian exhibitions, including the General Italian Exposition in Turin in 1884 and an exhibition in Rome in 1888.

Coming up in our auction 'Fine Furniture, Works of Art & Decorations at Benham Park', we are pleased to present this elegant white marble bust of a young woman by Lapini (Lot 279). Dated 1891, the bust depicts a woman, possibly personifying Night. Her gaze is cast gently downwards, while stars adorn her hair, and a crescent moon, accompanied by flowers, embellishes her draped décolletage.

The auction will take place at Dreweatts Newbury on Tuesday 27 & Wednesday 28 October. Viewing will take place at Benham Park, from Friday 23 - Monday 26 October.

From intimate interiors to atmospheric landscapes, our 19th Century Pictures & Works on Paper auction celebrates the rich tradition of British watercolour painting.⁠

Demonstrating the medium’s remarkable ability to capture detail, light and atmosphere, we have John Varley’s intimate interior scene (Lot 219); George Arthur Fripp’s captivating view of Richmond Castle (Lot 240); and Thomas Shotter Boys’s evocative landscape (Lot 249).⁠

The auction opens with works from the collection of the late artist and watercolour collector Russell Worby, who acquired works with an informed and learned eye. His collection brings together works by leading figures including David Cox, Edward Dayes, Anthony Devis, Thomas Rowlandson, Paul Sandby, John Varley, alongside a fascinating selection of names from the great age of British watercolours.

DREWEATTS INTRODUCING | Our November 'At Home' auction brings together remarkable upholstery, furniture, fine and decorative art in one place and on demand!

For the second edition, we invited interior designer Poppy Rosemary Smith to style the new pocket catalogue, selecting pieces she loves most from the sale and showcasing them in specially styled vignettes.

After almost ten years working alongside some of the industry’s most talented interior designers, Poppy has recently launched her own design studio. With a degree in Historic Building Conservation, she has a particular appreciation for old buildings. Her interiors are colourful, but rarely loud; full of pattern but not overly coordinated. She is drawn to soft, chalky and weathered colour, unexpected combinations of fabrics and patterns, and materials that become more beautiful with age. For Poppy, a home should be lived in, not perfectly styled.
