Once described by Francis Bacon as "The best-kept secret in the art world", British artist Adrian Ryan (1920-1998) was known for his expressive landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and scenes of Cornwall, Suffolk, London, and France. Unlike his contemporaries, Ryan resisted the advent of Abstract Expressionism. His work, however, was expressionistic with strong abstract elements and earned him the sobriquet of “The English Soutine”.

On Wednesday 8 July, we are pleased to present our auction of Modern & Contemporary Art. The auction includes the studio sale of Adrian Ryan. The influence of Pierre Bonnard, Chaïm Soutine and the young Maurice Utrillo shows in the work of Adrian Ryan, as well as Modigliani. Ahead of the auction, we learn more about his life and work.

Yesterday, we held our Fine Jewellery auction. Featuring an exceptional selection of jewellery, the sale highlighted the elegance, craftsmanship and enduring appeal of fine jewels across a range of periods and styles. Competitive bidding was evident throughout with the sale realising a total of £626,300, exceeding the pre-sale estimate by 142%.

Commenting on the results, Dreweatts’ Head of Jewellery Charlotte Peel, said "Period designs and signed jewels achieved outstanding results at Dreweatts Fine Jewellery sale, underscoring strong collector demand for fine natural pearls, exceptional coloured gemstones and superior craftmanship. Period jewels and rare collector’s pieces such as the jewels by Lisa Sotilis drew strong competition, reflecting the market's continued appreciation for rare and unique pieces.”

Highlighted here are Lots 210, 35, 36, 89, 53 & 149

We are busy setting up at Dreweatts Newbury, as our Fine Furniture, Sculpture, Carpets, Ceramics and Works of Art auction goes on view from Friday 19 June! Here is a throwback to the photoshoot when we were preparing the auction catalogue.

In collaboration with British design house Watts 1874, we thoughtfully paired furniture and works of art throughout the catalogue with the house's beautiful fabric designs, demonstrating how these pieces can be reinterpreted in both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Ahead of the auction, Marie-Séverine de Caraman Chimay, CEO of Watts 1874, selected some of her favourite lots and shared how she would style them.

Growing up surrounded by an extraordinary artistic legacy, coming from a family of artists and patrons, Jemima Pitman curated a beautiful collection of art.

Her parents, Hugo and Reine Pitman were avid art collectors. They lived in Odstock, not far from Fryern Court, home of Augustus John and Dorelia McNeill, and subsequently became close friends. John drew and painted the family on numerous occasions, and over the years, Hugo Pitman formed a collection of John’s work. Opening the auction, we have these works depicting Jemima and Hugo (Lots 1-4).

We are pleased to be offering the collection in our auction ‘The Legacy of John Singer & Emily Sargent: The Jemima Pitman Collection’ on Tuesday 7 July. The collection of 52 works is currently on view at Dreweatts London and open to the public until Thursday 18 June (with late opening on Wednesday 17 June). Viewing is also available by appointment from 19 June - 2 July.

For centuries, pearls have been among the most coveted treasures in the world. Revered for their rarity, beauty and symbolism, they have adorned royalty, nobility and cultural icons across generations.

At various points in history, natural pearls were considered even more valuable than diamonds, prized for the extraordinary circumstances required for their formation and discovery.

Ahead of our auction of Fine Jewellery, Head of Jewellery, Charlotte Peel explores the fascinating world of pearls, from their rich history and symbolism to the differences between natural and cultured pearls. She also considers their versatility, enduring wearability and the best ways to care for these timeless treasures.

David Hockney (1937-2026) 🤍

We are saddened to hear of the passing of the legendary artist David Hockney. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

We had the honour of offering this beautiful etching by David Hockney at auction back in 2023.

In the summer of 1934 Eric Ravilious made five drawings, depicting the Asham Cement Works and neighbouring chalk quarry on the flank of Beddingham Hill. Most people viewed the recently-established enterprise as an eyesore but to Ravilious, who stumbled upon the site, it was a marvel! In our Modern & Contemporary Art auction this summer, we are pleased to be offering one of these works (Lot 126).

It was the hidden landscape of the chalk pit (or 'cement pit') that most inspired Ravilious. He had long been captivated by the cool Alpine watercolours of itinerant 18th century artist Francis Towne, yet he was wary of the sublime. The ever-changing topography of the chalk pit offered Ravilious the opportunity to explore a miniature, man-made, 20th century version of Alpine landscape. The chalk pit became for him a playground of the imagination. At the time, Ravilious was still finding his way as an artist and Asham offered him the opportunity to experiment. In 'The Cement Pit' we can clearly see for the first time aspects of his mature vision.

Each of these dreamscapes is carefully constructed so that our eye moves constantly from the foreground into the distance and back again, and it was at Asham and among the surrounding hills that Ravilious began to understand how to do this.

On Tuesday 7 July, Dreweatts will present the auction 'The Legacy of John Singer and Emily Sargent: The Jemima Pitman Collection'. It is a privilege to bring to auction the collection of Jemima Pitman, a discerning collector in her own right, who recognised her family’s extraordinary artistic heritage as both artists and patrons. As the grand-niece of John Singer and Emily Sargent, Jemima championed their work, and it is the first time that these works have come to the market.

Painted circa 1903, a highlight from the collection is Lot 30, this beautiful Venice scene by John Singer Sargent. Sargent travelled widely throughout his life, through Europe, North America, the Near East and America. However, certain places held particular appeal and one city, to which he returned time and again was Venice. The present watercolour shows dramatically outlined boats in the foreground, contrast with the sunlit San Giorgio Maggiore in the distance.
