I duped myself.

Thought as I opened the first little square on my advent calendar that it would mark me getting loads of sh*t done in December.

It didn't quite work out like that. 🙄

I was hit with one of the many bugs going around and never felt like I fully caught up and got on top of everything.

Perhaps this is just how it is as a freelancer.

On the positive side, I've had 3 new business calls, started work on refreshing my website and had some lovely Christmas catchups with colleagues and friends.

Now we're in Spain for the holidays where you can get a drink and a tapa for less than €2.50 so all is well!

Taking the advice of many and giving myself permission to switch off and enjoy the moment.

Was feeling a bit left out with no works Christmas night out so I treated myself to a ticket to The Snowflake Ball with and .

A chance to get glammed up, do something different and support some worthy causes.

I only knew our fabulous table host of but had loads of fun chats and dancing with the rest of the lovely group.

Ps. Thank you to my awesome friend for the loan of her gorgeous dress. 🥰🥰

Not sure how it’s been a whole month since our intense 8 week business course with MasteredHQ wrapped with a pitching & networking day. I've made some great connections with so many interesting people doing completely different things to me. But we're still on the same journey, navigating the highs and lows of self-employed life.

For me, one of the best things to come from it is having a no judgement zone, where you can be open and honest about what goes into making it all work.

To keep us on track, we’re now having much needed monthly accountability calls with our peer groups and fab mentor Maddie Maughan.

My takeaway action today was the reminder that while you might be busy now, you always need to look ahead and people apparently aren’t mind readers. 😄

They won’t know you have capacity unless you tell them.

So here it is…

We've all been on an intense 6 week course with the team from MasteredHQ and this is the wrap event for us to come back together and celebrate what we've learned. Happy 1️⃣st Business Birthday to me! 🥳🍾🥂

Well, it’s 1 year fully self-employed and just over 2 years since I officially launched but thought it was greedy to have 2 birthdays.

The good stuff.

👍I love having the freedom to set my own schedule.
👍Choosing the projects and clients I want to work with.
👍Working from different locations (currently writing this from a toasty 34 degrees in Northern Spain🔥).
👍Most importantly, be there for my partner and family when needed.

All amazing.

But let’s not skim over the less ‘sunny’ bits.

🌩A good dollop of self-doubt on regular occasions (why don’t I know how to use the zillion platforms that everyone else seems to use to become uber-efficient? 🙄).
🌩Time-management (yes, I know it’s sunny outside and I’m my own boss but c’mon, focus!).
🌩Ever-changing monthly income (July/August and December/January billing are not my friends). Look at the year, not the month, has been a great bit of advice that I try to stick to when I have a wobble.

It’s still all a work-in-progress but I’m excited to continue the learning process.

My other half commented recently that he’s never heard me laughing so much during work calls. I’ll take that as a really positive sign. 🥰

Ending the week with this fantastic testimonial from Herb Kim, thank you. 🥰

Herb was my employer for 🔟 years before I leaped into self-employment. We had an incredible journey delivering some huge conferences around the North East of England; working with some truly inspirational people along the way.

Have to say I’m super excited to be a ‘civilian’, as Herb puts it, this year at the upcoming Thinking Digital Conference on 15 & 16 May. If you’ve never been, please do check it out, you won’t regret it! 💯

You could say it hasn’t been a productive day when your billable time is only 3 hours. I felt really sluggish this morning and couldn’t get started. 🥱

It’s hard to not be constantly watching your time tracker in this self-employed life.

But I’m trying to change my mindset on this and look at the positives of the day.

✔️I’ve done the essentials. No clients are waiting on anything urgent and I’m relatively up to date

⚡Caught up on the status of an Autumn event that I’m really excited about being involved with

💼Arranged an appointment with a business advisor to see if there is any support I can tap into as a business newbie

🤝Set up 2 meetings with some of my favourite colleagues for after Easter

📈Looked at my capacity for the next few months and been able to offer extra time to one of my clients

🏋️‍♀️Booked on an exercise class to kick start feeling more energised.

So...maybe it hasn’t been such a bad day after all. 😁

And I’m about to have coffee with a total Event guru so can pick her brains about what is new in that world!

Ps. Love my office aloe vera plant. It's going wild if anyone close by wants a cutting 🌱

January has absolutely flown over for me!

Apart from a little wobble at the beginning of the month, I think this has been the first time in a lot of years that I haven't wished the month would hurry up and end, which I'm seeing as a positive.

How was it for you?

Feeling good vibes for February - maybe as there's also a holiday coming up! ☀️☀️

❓Do you still use business cards or do you think it's a bit outdated?

I was super excited getting this first set printed back in June 2022 (how was it that long ago??), and while the small design is a bit different it does mean I never win in business card prize draws! 🙄

Now it seems more efficient to just scan someone’s LinkedIn code at an event but until I run out, I will keep a few with me. I think the format and colours can say a bit about your personality too.

Tomorrow, I’m onboarding a new client. 🥳 Thanks to a card I handed out at a BBQ hosted by my partner’s work colleague in September 2022.

You just never know where your next client will come from!
