A piece of North East musical history highlights our upcoming Music Auction next week.

Owned and played by Jarrow singer-songwriter Mike Mason, this guitar was used throughout a career that saw him perform thousands of gigs across the UK. It featured on recordings including United, Newcastle United, the famous Newcastle United cup final anthem, and Nobody's Child by his band with his sons Mike Mason & The Little People (pictured here playing in front of Penshaw Monument).

The guitar comes with a remarkable story spanning working men's clubs, television appearances and some unforgettable moments in North East culture.

Estimate: £6,000–£8,000

Our July Books & Works On Paper Auction takes place on 15th July, featuring rare and important works spanning centuries of collecting history.

Pictured here is one of the sale's standout lots – John Boydell's A Collection of Prints, Engraved After the Most Capital Paintings in England. Published between 1769 and 1792, this remarkable nine-volume set contains engravings and mezzotints after works by artists including George Stubbs, Raphael and Van Dyck.

Boydell played a pivotal role in transforming Britain into a major exporter of prints during the Georgian era, and complete sets of this scale and significance are exceptionally scarce. With little evidence of another nine-volume set readily traceable online, this is a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire an exceptionally scarce set.

Estimate: £10,000 – £15,000

Viewing: Tuesday 14 July, 10am–3pm

If you have rare books, prints, manuscripts or works on paper and are considering selling, we'd be delighted to hear from you.

Following the huge success of Part 1 of The Brian Whitton Collection, we’re delighted to announce that Part 2 is now live online ahead of the auction on 25 June.

This fascinating collection offers a wonderful journey through the career of John Tunnard, from his early Cornish scenes and farmyard watercolours to the surrealist works of the 1930s and the distinctive abstract landscapes that made him one of Britain’s most celebrated modern artists.

Collected over many years by Professor Brian Whitton, the sale is a brilliant reflection of a passionate and knowledgeable collector’s eye.

Alongside Tunnard’s work, you’ll also find paintings by his father, John “Jack” Tunnard, and some rarely seen works by his wife, Mary Robertson.
