I'm proud to be a volunteer. As a contract engineer this fits in and around my work. I'm an active STEM Ambassador, a committee member of the north-east branch of the Chartered Quality Institute and I volunteer at my local community centre, helping to organise rooms for events and I also work in the kitchen.

Why do I volunteer?

I like to help others - there's no financial incentive, no one forcing me to do it - I volunteer because I enjoy it and a simple 'thank you' is reward enough.

If you have some spare time - even just an hour per week - why not see how you could volunteer in some way.

While I'm between contracts it gives me time to visit schools and take part in various activities. What makes it all worthwhile is not only helping young people develop skills such as teamwork, problem solving and communication, but also getting a thank you from the school.
