COPPER-LEAD LINED AND TRI-METAL BEARINGS

Oiltech Bearings has been pushing it's boundaries to solve a customer problem. The long lead-time and high cost spares was causing a headache for a client. We believed it was possible to solve this problem by developing in-house capability to cast copper-lead alloys.

The process allows Oiltech Bearings to cast small items from any composition of material. To verify the process, metallographic examination was performed on test pieces. This verified the material structure and bond interface. Ultrasonic testing was also performed.

The first production parts have been supplied by Oiltech to replace a set of thrust pads. The next stage in development will be to adopt the process for small diameter centrifgual casting of copper-lead alloys. When combined with whitemetal casting, tri-metal bearings could then be produced in house.

Test running a bearing housing, designed and built by Oiltech. Fitted to a Howden fan for hydrogen production which runs at 200 deg C. Bearings are instrumented in loaded areas, test bed used at Sulzer Middlesbrough.
