Is anyone else feeling the post-holiday blues?

One minute it’s summer holidays, long evenings and trying to remember which day of the week it is… the next, the kids are back at school, there’s a definite chill in the morning and the shops are quietly filling up with things we’re not ready to mention yet!

September always feels like a bit of a reset, back to routines, back to business and, inevitably, plenty happening in the world of HR and employment law.

This month, we’re looking at what the cooling jobs market could mean if you’re recruiting, where things are up to with the proposed changes to zero-hours contracts, and a couple of tribunal cases with some really practical lessons for employers.

There’s also news from the new Fair Work Agency, a slightly worrying statistic about basic employment rights, and an HMRC warning worth knowing about if anyone offers you a suspiciously clever way to cut your payroll tax bill.

🏖️ Is your holiday pay paperwork ready for closer inspection?

The government is consulting on how the new Fair Work Agency should enforce statutory holiday pay from 2027, with a particular focus on protecting lower-paid workers.

For employers, this is a timely reminder to check that holiday pay calculations and records are accurate, clear and up to date before enforcement becomes tighter.

The consultation closes on 22 September 2026.

🎒 Back to school means back to routine… well, eventually!

For working parents, the new school term can bring forgotten PE kits, packed-lunch panic and last-minute childcare changes.

A little flexibility and understanding from employers can make a big difference during the transition, helping employees feel supported while keeping the business running smoothly.

Here’s to a positive new term for everyone heading back to school, and all the parents trying to remember which day is swimming day! 😊

📱 Can technology help your team give better feedback?

Used well, simple tools can make feedback quicker, more consistent and easier to act on. From regular check-in reminders to shared notes and pulse surveys, technology can help managers spot patterns and address concerns early.

But it should support conversations, not replace them. The most valuable feedback is still honest, timely and human.

💡 Did you know?

A probationary period does not remove an employee’s statutory rights.

Even during probation, employers should follow a fair process, keep clear records and address concerns promptly rather than waiting until the final review.

🎄 Dare we mention Christmas already?

It might feel early, but for some employees, the cost of Christmas is already becoming a worry.

Money concerns and mental health are closely connected, yet financial wellbeing can easily be overlooked in workplace wellbeing conversations.

Employers do not need to become financial advisers, but they can create a supportive environment by:

✅ Training managers to recognise financial stress
✅ Making trusted support and resources easy to find
✅ Encouraging confidential, judgement-free conversations
✅ Reviewing benefits or flexible options that may help

A simple, sensitive conversation could make a real difference to someone who is struggling quietly.

😬 “I’ve been made a manager, but nobody taught me how to manage people.”

Sound familiar?

Many line managers are promoted because they are great at their job, then suddenly expected to handle absence, performance concerns and difficult conversations without any formal training.

That can lead to issues being avoided, handled inconsistently or allowed to grow.

Flexion gives managers practical, online training to help them:

✅ Address people issues earlier
✅ Handle difficult conversations calmly
✅ Make fair and consistent decisions
✅ Lead with greater confidence

The training fits around busy working lives and focuses on real situations managers face every day.

💬 Does your team receive regular feedback, or only hear something when it goes wrong?

Saving feedback for an annual review can mean forgotten details, growing issues and employees feeling blindsided.

Continuous feedback makes short, useful conversations part of everyday working life. This could be a quick check-in, recognising a job well done or offering guidance while something is still fresh.

It does not require complicated systems or more meetings. Just consistent, open and two-way communication.

Our free guide, Building a Continuous Feedback Culture, shares practical advice for small teams.
