Have you ever walked over this 750 year old ghost story?
This amazing landmark is Monnow Bridge and Gatehouse in Monmouth, Wales! Built around 1272 out of striking Old Red Sandstone, it is famous as the only remaining medieval fortified river bridge in Great Britain that still keeps its original gate tower intact on the span.
Over the centuries, this incredible landmark has transformed from a fierce military fortress into a busy toll gate, a dark local prison, and ultimately... one of the most paranormally active structures on the Anglo-Welsh border.
If these ancient stones could talk, they’d tell tales of brutal battles, Civil War musket fire, and public executions. But locals say the history here doesn't just stay in the past—sometimes, it walks right beside you.
The Hauntings of Monnow Bridge include the legend of the ghostly children. Multiple independent groups of visitors have reported seeing two translucent children playing on the walkway. In one famous account, onlookers watched thrown stones pass clean through their figures before they dissolved into thin air.
Another legend is of The Doomed Horseman. Legend says Sir John Winter, a ruthless Civil War commander who ordered a rival captain hanged right at the bridge, is cursed to eternally ride furiously across the span of the bridge at night.
Further legends include The Murdered Town Crier. Keep an ear out for cold spots and disembodied whispers. They are blamed on the restless spirit of Gwillam Pemrose, a town crier brutally murdered here for a handful of silver coins.
The Phantoms of the Monnow also belong here. In the 1970s, campers nearby woke up to see a man in full medieval armor standing motionless on the bridge. When they approached, he vanished instantly.
Today, the bridge is fully pedestrianized and hosts peaceful weekend farmers' markets. But when the river mist rolls in, the ancient tower still casts a very heavy, historic shadow.
