Fishy Filaments

Fishy Filaments Going global under the tradename '0rCA' but still recycling marine plastics into 3D printing supplies and beyond.

Fishy Filaments takes used fishing gear and recycles it into raw materials for use in 3D printing and beyond.

Our base in Mount's Bay is also one of the finest places in the UK to witness marine wildlife in its natural home. From common dolphins to porpoises and seabirds, these waters are rich with life. Its sheltered waters create an important feeding ground, and boat trips from places like Penzance and Mousehole offer some of the best chances to see these incredible animals up close. Spaces like this matter deeply, not only for what they give us in wonder, but for what they protect.
That is why companies like 0rCA matter. Supporting our Kickstarter means backing the protection, celebration, and future of our marine world.

Newlyn Lighthouse stands at the end of the South Pier guarding the entrance to one of Britain’s most important fishing ports.

First established in 1887 and rebuilt in 1915, the red and white tower is more than a harbour light. Beside it sits the Newlyn Tidal Observatory, which has provided the official reference point for mean sea level in Great Britain for more than a century.

From guiding fishing boats safely home to helping define how sea level is measured across the country, this small lighthouse plays a remarkably important role.

We're on Kickstarter. 🌊

0rCA has developed a patented process to turn end-of-life fishing nets into certified engineering-grade nylon. No compromise on material quality. No contamination shortcuts.

To scale what we're building, we need your support.

Back us and you'll receive exclusive 0rCA rewards, designed with the ocean in mind.

Every contribution directly funds the technology that keeps fishing nets out of landfill and in the material supply chain where they belong.

Each year, thousands of tonnes of end-of-life nylon fishing nets enter the waste stream, most of it downcycled or landfilled.

We collect directly from harbour. Our patented process removes biological and chemical contamination that conventional recyclers can't. What comes out is a certified engineering-grade nylon, not a compromise.

If you have not had the chance to see them yet, keep your eyes peeled for the incredible murals in Newquay town centre.

This striking piece by Elle Koziupa captures the eye straight away, showing a fisherman mending his nets, with depth, colour, and shadow bringing the whole wall to life.

Most recycled fishing nets end up as low-grade plastic.

Here's why, and how we're changing it. 🔬

Gillnets don't just get dirty on the surface. Biofilm, bacteria, micro-algae, diatoms, and marine organisms, accumulates deep inside every knot. You can see it clearly here under a microscope.

The problem? The majority of net recyclers melt nets as they come, contamination and all.

That shortcut produces an impure, low-grade material that limits what the plastic can actually become.

Our patented cleaning process gets all of it out. What goes in is a fouled, end-of-life fishing net. What comes out is an engineering-grade material. Clean, consistent, and high-performing.

Recovered fishing nets can become high performance materials used around the world.

Signify/Phillips used 0rCA recycled nylon in its MyCreation Coast Breeze lighting collection, helping launch a new approach to design based on local production, 3D printing and on demand manufacturing.

From waste fishing gear to modern lighting design, the project showed how circular materials can transform both products and the way they are made.

Newlyn grew from a small fishing village on the shore of Mount’s Bay into one of Cornwall’s most important ports.

In the nineteenth century as many as 200 mackerel luggers sailed from here to fishing grounds near the Scillies, Ireland and France. Later in the year the same boats followed the great herring migrations north through the Irish Sea and into the North Sea.

But the fish that defined the town was the pilchard. On summer nights the lanterns of drifting boats lit the bay while crews worked their nets beneath the stars.

When shoals were sighted from the cliffs the cry of “Hevva!” rang out along the coast, signalling one of Cornwall’s most famous fisheries.

Every batch of material we produce can be traced back to where the nets were recovered.

From fishing boat to finished material, transparency is built into the process. (0rCA®)
