⚠️ Storm Austen: Is your site prepared?

With Storm Austen expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds across Ireland and parts of the UK from this evening into Friday, now is the time to make sure your sites are prepared.

For those managing construction projects, it's not just about keeping an eye on the forecast. It's about understanding what those conditions could mean for the work taking place and the people on site.

Before finishing up today, there are a few things worth checking.

Are scaffolding, hoardings, fencing and temporary structures secure? Have loose materials and equipment been properly stored? Are there lifting operations, roof works or other exposed activities that may need to be postponed?

Heavy rainfall also brings its own risks, particularly around excavations, ground conditions and site access.

Something worth remembering is that a site which was safe when everyone left on Thursday may not be safe when they return on Friday morning.

Make sure site teams and subcontractors understand the precautions in place, know when work should stop and that appropriate checks are carried out before activities resume.

A bit of forward planning now can prevent a much bigger problem later. Keep an eye on the latest updates from Met Éireann and the Met Office, particularly if you're responsible for sites across different locations.

Stay safe and look out for one another.

We encourage workers to report hazards, near misses and safety concerns, but when someone speaks up, do they ever hear what happened next?

A lot of the businesses we work with only start thinking about health and safety support after something has gone wrong. An accident, a visit from the inspector, or a principal contractor raising concerns on site.

By that stage it's always harder and always more expensive. There's the investigation, the time pulled away from the job, possible claims, and the knock to your reputation with clients and your own team.

The flip side is that most of those problems were small to begin with. A gap in a RAMS, a barrier that wasn't put back, a check that got skipped because the job was running late. Caught early, they take minutes to sort.

While the cost matters, it isn't really the point. The point is that everyone on site gets home safe at the end of the day.

Fair play to Ellan, who's had quite a busy week! 👏

After working as our Project Coordinator, Ellan has recently moved across to the PFA safety team. She's certainly not eased herself into it, completing both her IOSH Managing Safely and CSR training in the space of one week!

Ellan already knows our projects, our people and how much goes on behind the scenes to keep everything moving. Now she's getting the opportunity to build on that experience and develop her knowledge in a different area of the business.

One thing that's important to us as PFA grows is giving our people opportunities to learn, develop and progress within the team. It's great to see Ellan taking that next step in her career with us.

Great to see McGuinness Mechanical Engineering making the time to bring people together for a full site safety stand-down on Monday.

Our consultant Kevin was at the Portmarnock Real Estate Developments site delivering a talk on manual handling and spinal injuries.

It's something people deal with every day in construction, but the long-term effects of lifting, carrying and working in awkward positions can easily be overlooked.

Fair play to McGuinness Mechanical Engineering for organising the session and everyone on site for getting involved.

With the CIF 'Back to Basics' Construction Safety Campaign underway, it's good to see businesses taking the time to have these conversations where they matter most, out on site with the people doing the work.

Please join us in welcoming Oisin French to the PFA team as our new Accounts Technician. 👋

Oisin's route into accounts isn't the usual one. After 15 years in the betting industry and 7 years teaching English in Spain, he retrained in accounts and built up a broad grounding working in practice. Now he's bringing that to PFA.

His role covers the company's financials and cashflow, or as Oisin puts it, "making sure there's enough money in the bank before the wages go out."

He's clear on why that matters for a growing business:

"In finance, knowledge is power. Knowing what's coming in, what's going out and when is essential to keep everything moving. Growth can be a challenge if this isn't under control."

What drew him to PFA? A forward-thinking, modern team in an interesting industry, and he'd seen plenty of us on LinkedIn.
