This Saturday (4th Feb 2023) marks World Cancer day. Unfortunately, cancer does not discriminate and it affects everyone, relatives, friends and work colleagues.

Midas HR wants to take this time to support the physical and emotional wellbeing of all those impacted by cancer – patients, survivors and caregivers.

This year Working with Cancer will launch a mass media wakeup call to encourage employers and staff to play their part in supporting colleagues with cancer. This global initiative is aimed at removing the stigma of cancer at work by encouraging companies to stand with employees facing cancer, creating an open, supportive, and recovery focused culture for all employees.

Make sure to look out for their campaign on social media. Their latest short video is available below.

Latest Update from the Employers Federation

CONSULTATION ON HOLIDAY PAY (12 January 2023)

▪️The Government has launched a consultation on ‘Calculating holiday entitlement for part-year and irregular hours workers.’

▪️This is on the back of the Supreme Court case of Harpur Trust v Brazel which held that part year workers - who had permanent contract for full year - are entitled to the full 5.6 weeks of holiday leave.

▪️This could lead to scenarios eg. someone only earned £1k for working 1 week in the year - but if they had a permanent contract for full year - they would be entitled to £5,600 for holiday pay.

▪️The Consultation proposes to introduce an entitlement reference period to ensure pay and entitlement is directly proportionate to time spent working.

▪️Whilst this will be very welcome by businesses it is important for business in Northern Ireland to remember:

"Any legislative changes because of this consultation would extend to workers in Great Britain. Employment law is reserved to Westminster for Scotland and Wales through the Employment Rights Act 1996. Employment law is devolved to Northern Ireland."

▪️However if the Executive was restored it could be one taken forward here.

▪️The deadline for responding is 9 March 2023

New Year! New Opportunity to get your HR Compliance in order.

2023 is here… and after a long Christmas break (which we all needed), we are now all back to porridge and facing the loathsome tasks that we were putting off in 2022.

Now is the right time to be more proactive with your businesses legal requirements as an employer, which may include reviewing contracts of employment, policies, procedures etc.

Midas HR can provide assistance writing policies, procedures, contracts of employment and employee handbooks that are tailored to our client’s business.
