Waste doesn’t just affect the aesthetics of our environment – it can also cause lasting effects on our atmosphere. 🌡️
The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is climate change. Waste might not sound like a direct factor, but it does contribute to the environment’s rising temperature.
Organic products are always encouraged instead of synthetic ones such as plastics. This is because synthetic waste cannot decompose naturally.
However, organic waste releases a greenhouse gas, methane, when decomposed. Methane will trap heat in the atmosphere, causing the global temperature to rise and change the climate. 🌍️
The more waste we produce, the more greenhouse gas is released. This is why, when it comes to waste, the most ideal approach to climate change is always reduction – keeping the generation of methane to a minimum. 🗑️
That being said, methane can also be used to produce electricity. For example, at Allerton Waste Recovery Park, methane could power approximately 40,000 homes in the local community! In cases where waste is unavoidable, energy-to-waste technologies are a great solution to lessen the impact of waste on our climate. ⚡️ 💡
At Yorwaste, we work closely with Allerton Waste Recovery Park to make sure as much waste as possible is reused in a way that positively impacts our communities.
Of course, we should always reduce waste whenever we can. But if it’s necessary, make sure your waste provider makes good use of it!
