Waste doesn’t just affect the aesthetics of our environment – it can also cause lasting effects on our atmosphere. 🌡️

The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is climate change. Waste might not sound like a direct factor, but it does contribute to the environment’s rising temperature.

Organic products are always encouraged instead of synthetic ones such as plastics. This is because synthetic waste cannot decompose naturally.

However, organic waste releases a greenhouse gas, methane, when decomposed. Methane will trap heat in the atmosphere, causing the global temperature to rise and change the climate. 🌍️

The more waste we produce, the more greenhouse gas is released. This is why, when it comes to waste, the most ideal approach to climate change is always reduction – keeping the generation of methane to a minimum. 🗑️

That being said, methane can also be used to produce electricity. For example, at Allerton Waste Recovery Park, methane could power approximately 40,000 homes in the local community! In cases where waste is unavoidable, energy-to-waste technologies are a great solution to lessen the impact of waste on our climate. ⚡️ 💡

At Yorwaste, we work closely with Allerton Waste Recovery Park to make sure as much waste as possible is reused in a way that positively impacts our communities.

Of course, we should always reduce waste whenever we can. But if it’s necessary, make sure your waste provider makes good use of it!

The 70th Eurovision Song Contest is just around the corner, with the Grand Final taking place on Saturday 16th May. And while this love-it-or-hate-it musical showcase might not immediately have anything to do with waste, the United Kingdom's representative - Look Mum No Computer - is actually a very good example of what can come from recycling!

Sam Battle, the Brit behind Look Mum No Computer, is a musician and tech wizard - who's also known for uploading YouTube videos that show off the electronic synthesizers and music gear that he's made himself.

We love seeing what comes from reused and recycled items, and we think Sam's creations take the biscuit in terms of originality. From an organ made out of Furbys (yes, the annoying, furry, must-have toy of the 90s!) to a synthesizer fused with a Raleigh bicycle, Sam really does take recycling to the next level.

Look Mum No Computer's song 'Eins, Zwei, Drei' will be the UK's entry for this year's Eurovision Song Contest, and we have to admit, it's grown on us here at Yorwaste!

Will you be watching Sam this Saturday?

The Northallerton 10K is less than two weeks away! 🏃

If you've already booked your place for the race, did you know you're also supporting a local sensory centre? 👀

All entrance fees paid by runners of the Northallerton 10k are donated to Pendragon Community Trust. Pendragon is a small, local multi-sensory centre in Northallerton that helps and supports visitors of all age groups with varying physical and mental needs. Pendragon accommodates people from all over North Yorkshire and beyond.

Thanks to the funds raised at last year's Northallerton 10k, Pendragon was able to complete the new sensory space on the first floor - the Sue Kerfoot room 🙌

The Sue Kerfoot room includes:
🛌 A waterbed for relaxation,
💡 Light displays for visual stimulation,
🎶 Music
🧸 A variety of sensory toys.

It is now available to anyone who would appreciate a quiet space in contrast to the main sensory space with the ball pool and slide 🧘

The centre has a lift and hoists in both rooms to allow easy access and movement around the centre.

Pendragon is a one-of-a-kind sensory centre that has gained visitors from as far as Sunderland and Hull. Run in this year’s Northallerton 10k to give them your support!

May the Fourth Be With You 👽

Today is a bank holiday here in England, but the 4th of May has also been unofficially named 'Star Wars Day' due to it's similarity to the film's famous phrase 'may the force be with you'. While some of us simply appreciate the play on words, many of our colleagues are indeed celebrating everything Star Wars.

Meet Rachael, IT Systems Analyst at Yorwaste. She's a self-professed Star Wars fan and was excited to share just a few of her intergalactic pics with us. "If it's Star Wars, Harry Potter or Taylor Swift, I'm your girl," she says. "My favourite picture of all time is the Darth one. I was like a giddy school girl!" We think they're out of this world 🌎

If you're a Star Wars fan like Rachael, we'd love to see your pics. Drop them in the comments!
