Highly competitive, ambitious, fearful, often indecisive, and frequently self-delusional by thirty-nine I had become a director and part owner of a national construction company with ten regional offices. With it came daily fear of failure, exhaustion, isolation, and unrecognised depression. What great success! I very nearly lost the most important thing in my life that my workaholic behaviour was
meant to benefit – my family. I hated my job and in the latter stages came extremely close to a nervous breakdown yet lacked the courage to change. Fortunately, trauma changed everything. The business failed, I lost my job and became generally unemployable. I only managed to secure work for less than half of the last twenty-seven years and that in low paid temporary part-time work. All savings and private pension are long gone. By now I should be a shrivelling mess, lacking motivation and a sense of purpose yet the reality could not be more different. I like who I am, energised, motivated, incredibly grateful, clear thinking and have the benefit generally of an untroubled mind. I have learned how to achieve “Peace of mind” in spite of all the negative mental chatter that we all naturally experience from the day we are able to think for ourselves. My purpose now is to share with others what I have come to understand, learn, and apply and to do so in a collaborative, conversational manner. I will be running community-based weekly events titled:
“An Untroubled Mind”
