Warning - be alert for spam emails.
Ive just received a spam email that looked like it was from HMRC regarding the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme. (grants for the self employed during covid).
Be vigilant, always check the email address its come from, never click on links.
Here are some things to look out for:
- The message is sent from a public email domain. No legitimate organisation will send emails from an address that ends '.com'.
- The domain name is misspelt.
- The email is poorly written.
- It includes suspicious attachments or links.
- The message creates a sense of urgency.
- Generic greetings, such as “Hello Bank Customer” rather than using the recipient's actual name
- Usually, the sender's address will look like a genuine email, but it's not actually the genuine email address for the company they claim to be
- Check to see if the last part of the email address they're sending from does actually legitimately belongs to that company.
- If there is a link hover over it to see where it directs to (without clicking on it!)
- Does the subject line seem irrelevant, not make sense, or not match the content of the email?
- Is the link to a well-known website, but spelled incorrectly and somewhat suspicious looking?
