Antonia Wills is qualified and registered with the Society of Master Saddle Fitters, and operates under the procedures and code of conduct as laid down by the SMS. She is happy not only to fit you with a new or second hand saddle, but also to check and alter your

existing saddle if that is appropriate, and offers an on-site flocking service. She will travel any distance by arrangement from her base in Northamptonshire. An independent saddle fitter

Working as an independent saddle fitter, Antonia has access to a vast number of saddle brands in a comprehensive range of fittings, so that she is frequently able to supply the right saddle for you, whatever your discipline, from the back of her vehicle. To meet today’s high standards of fit for both horse and rider, and to accommodate the more challenging horse and/or rider physiques, Antonia may recommend a made-to-measure saddle. Then you can choose exactly which colour, leather type, knee block position etc you require, and Antonia can specify the correct tree/panel type/gusset depth etc for your horse. Antonia is a former three day event rider, and has taken many horses from scratch to advanced level. She still competes in all disciplines and derives the greatest pleasure in producing well trained and confident horses for others to take on up through the grades. She has been running an event yard since 1982, although nowadays is so busy with the saddle fitting that she only has time to do one horse, and has rented the rest of the yard out. She is a BE Accredited Trainer, and any spare time is taken up with teaching today's eventing hopefuls. In fact, unlike many saddle fitters who started out in the saddle manufacturing or retail sectors, Antonia came into saddle fitting from the teaching and training perspective, which gives her a clear insight into the needs of the modern competition rider and horse. As she puts it “I got really fed up with trying to teach riders to sit in a correct, balanced position on saddles that were out of balance, and was forever putting make-shift pads under the front or back of pupils’ saddles to give the riders some idea of what I was trying to achieve! And of course it’s not just the rider at stake – if the rider is out of balance, his or her weight is not in the right place for the horse to carry it, which leads to poor performance at best and a sore back at worst.”

Antonia's passion for correct saddle fitting grew and she set about acquiring as much knowledge as possible. The SMS's training and qualification procedures are very thorough and necessitate a full knowledge of saddle construction, horse and rider anatomy and the bio-mechanics of how the horse works, and how important it is to relate each of these factors.

🅰: Yes, possibly, particularly if your old saddle is adjustable and the two horses are similar in build. But how ever adjustable they might be, some saddles do not transfer easily between horses. If for example the previous horse was a skinny high withered type, and the new one has a flatter back, it may be impossible to “make it fit”. Also the old horse may have accommodated a 17.5” saddle but the new more compact one might only take a 17”.

🆀: 𝓒𝓪𝓷 𝔂𝓸𝓾 𝓫𝓻𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓸𝓾𝓽 𝓼𝓮𝓬𝓸𝓷𝓭 𝓱𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓹𝓵𝓮𝓪𝓼𝓮 𝓪𝓼 𝓘 𝓬𝓪𝓷’𝓽 𝓪𝓯𝓯𝓸𝓻𝓭 𝓷𝓮𝔀? 𝓞𝓱, 𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓬𝓪𝓷 𝓲𝓽 𝓫𝓮 𝓫𝓻𝓸𝔀𝓷, 𝓪𝓼 𝓘’𝓿𝓮 𝓳𝓾𝓼𝓽 𝓫𝓸𝓾𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝓪 𝓫𝓻𝓸𝔀𝓷 𝓫𝓻𝓲𝓭𝓵𝓮❓

🅰: Again yes, if I have the perfect used saddle for you and your horse that’s great, but stipulating a colour reduces the choice. Why not buy the saddle first and then choose a bridle?

🙏Please remember that the saddle is the next most important thing to consider after the choice of horse, and it’s wise to set aside the money for a new one so that you are not compromising in any way. Most people know that they have to afford a vetting, worming, dentist and insurance, as well as the cost of the horse, but they forget the most important thing – the saddle! 𝓗𝓮𝓪𝓭 𝓢𝓬𝓻𝓪𝓽𝓬𝓱𝓮𝓻𝓼❗️

As a saddlefitter I am used to seeing horses with tricky conformation – but to see two so completely different examples on the same day got me thinking! 🤔

🟢Firstly: 𝐝𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 with muscle wastage either side of the spine. Some horses get more dipped with age, this lovely mare is 26 and still going strong! It’s difficult to find a tree that corresponds to the shape of this back, most trees would be too straight or flat and would be inclined to “bridge” ie have contact at the front and the back of the panel, but not in the centre👎. The solution is to flock through the centre of the saddle to fill the gap, or put shims in the panel (depending on the make). You can also buy half pads with three pockets each side, and you put shims in the centre pockets. Luckily the saddle area for this horse is relatively level, she only rises sharply behind the saddle, so it wasn’t as tricky as first thought.👍

🟢Secondly:“𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭” – ie croup high and wide behind the saddle area. This Irish boy is only four and it is sure to grow, develop more of a wither and level up. Until then, the danger is that saddles will tend to tip the rider forwards and possibly slip forwards over the shoulders👎. He would need a saddle with a flat tree and a relatively shallow panel at the back. Using point straps would help the saddle stay put.👍

𝓒𝓪𝓷 𝔂𝓸𝓾 𝓪𝓼𝓼𝓮𝓼𝓼 𝓼𝓪𝓭𝓭𝓵𝓮 𝓯𝓲𝓽 𝓸𝓷 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓵𝓾𝓷𝓰𝓮❓

𝐍𝐎❗ Most saddles will bounce around on the lunge, particularly new ones that haven’t bedded in.😖

There are three stages to assessing saddle fit:

🐎𝓢𝓽𝓪𝓽𝓲𝓬 – ie sitting the saddle on the horse to see if it looks balanced front to back, does not “bridge” or sit too high, and that the tree roughly corresponds to the shape of the horses back. Several saddles may “pass” at this stage.

🐎𝓖𝓲𝓻𝓽𝓱𝓮𝓭 𝓾𝓹 with a normal numnah/pad – is the saddle still in contact all along the panel? Or does it lift at the back and swim around as the horse walks? This may eliminate one or two of the choices.

🏇𝓓𝔂𝓷𝓪𝓶𝓲𝓬 - ie ridden in – the most important part! I am looking for: adequate clearance under the weight of the rider (not a certain amount of fingers, just space above and either side of the spine) at the front and the back; a saddle that sits “reasonably still” in all paces and doesn’t slip to either side on a corner; a saddle that sits the rider centrally (not tipping them into an “armchair position” or on to their fork). And critically a saddle that the horse is comfortable and moves freely in, and the rider feels "at home" in. I need to see the horse walk and trot at the very least, and ideally canter on both reins.

If you are really unable to ride on the day (young or unbroken horse, rider not available etc) I will normally do the best I can with a static fitting, but will need to come back for the ridden assessment.

Fairfax have really taken the science of saddle design to a new level to achieve maximum comfort for horse and rider. Of course the saddle has to be well fitted as well!

The prolite layer also makes the saddles easier to flock, you get a nice smooth finish.

I can’t believe this hasn’t sold yet! It might not be the latest Albion model, but it’s still a fantastic saddle, especially if you have an awkward horse on which every saddle seems to move, or lift or bounce.🤔 Albions are especially noted for their quality and durability😉.

🟠With the Genesis tree this saddle will sit very still and give all the security the rider needs. It has a slightly deeper seat and narrower twist than the old K2’s, providing a more professional feel. The three girth straps give a choice of girthing position (it is easy to remove the one you don’t want). This saddle is in great condition and is a bargain at well under half of the RRP.👏🏼

🟠I'm happy to visit and fit this, or you can ask me to send it to you to self-fit - as is the case with all my second hand saddles.

𝓒𝓞𝓜𝓕𝓞𝓡𝓣 𝓕𝓞𝓡 𝓗𝓞𝓡𝓢𝓔 𝓐𝓝𝓓 𝓡𝓘𝓓𝓔𝓡

🟠Whatever you do with your horse it’s got to be comfortable👏 – and that applies to ALL its tack, (bridle, saddle, numnah, girth etc). Some horses are more stoical than others, so it can be difficult to detect any issues, whereas others make it perfectly clear if something is bothering them! But even the stoical ones will improve their performance if everything is just so.👌

❓𝒮𝑜 𝒽𝑜𝓌 𝒸𝒶𝓃 𝓎𝑜𝓊 𝓉𝑒𝓁𝓁🤔 Well, your horse might have greater freedom of movement and be more willing to move forwards – or a previously sharp horse might feel more settled. He/she might be more compliant. He/she may show greater flexibility and engagement on the flat or scope over a fence.🏇🏽

🟠Any changes I suggest during a saddle fitting or check might be minor – a bit of flocking to adjust the balance of the saddle, or a half pad to compensate loss of topline or to prevent side slip, a change of girth or numnah – or in some cases it might be worth trying some different saddles to see if that makes a difference.😀

There are more obvious signs of discomfort – bucking, napping, lumps, swellings, white hairs in the saddle area, sore back etc and these should immediately be checked out by a professional (vet, physio, saddle fitter). These symptoms might not be related to saddle fit, so its worth going down every path.🐎

🟠Of course its not just the horse – it’s the rider also. If the saddle feels bulky, hard or out of balance you won’t be riding at your best, and able to apply your aids effectively – and an unbalanced rider means an unbalanced horse. 🙁

🟠So, whatever your discipline, it’s worth having all your tack professionally checked and the saddle especially, as that’s what carries you! I don’t mind if you are a happy hacker or a top rate pro – I’m happy to come out and check or refit your GP, Dressage saddle, Jump saddle, show saddle – whatever you ride in, and we can discuss any changes that might make life more comfortable for your horse and yourself.🎖

🔴 The EK Go is Equipe’s flagship model, and is chosen by Laura Collett🥇, among others, who love the feeling of being “at one with the horse”. It is built on the revolutionary lightweight and durable EK carbon fibre tree, which incorporates the D.S.B (Damping System EQ bridge) – an effective shock absorbing system. It also has a unique lateral flexibility, to allow extra freedom and comfort for the horse. 🐴

🔴This saddle is 4 years old and has had limited use, so it’s a real bargain. I am happy to fit it or you can try it yourself.

❓𝐹𝒶𝓃𝒸𝓎 𝒶 𝑀𝒶𝒹𝑒 𝓉𝑜 𝑀𝑒𝒶𝓈𝓊𝓇𝑒 𝒮𝒶𝒹𝒹𝓁𝑒❓

When I go to fit a saddle I take a full van load of new and second hand saddles and demo saddles. I can often fit a saddle during my initial visit, especially if its adjustable, but if not, I can order a saddle that is fully customised to you and your horse. Your horse might be an unusual shape, you might prefer different knee blocks or you might fancy some eyecatching bling!🤩

Saddle orders can take up to 8 weeks to arrive, so patience is at a premium😇. Sometimes horses change shape in the intervening time, so it is with fingers firmly crossed that I go out to deliver and fit the new saddle! And nothing gives me more pleasure than seeing a happy rider and comfortable horse.☺️
