I saw a video about benefits analysts working with loads of screens and thought… maybe that explains why three weren’t enough for me either 😂

So now I’ve bought two more.

Important update for UK employers regarding SSP changes from April 2026.

The CIPP has raised a key query with the Department for Work and Pensions regarding employees with zero Average Weekly Earnings (AWE).

Current position:
Employees (not new starters) with zero AWE in the relevant period are still not entitled to SSP. However, the updated SSP1 form currently provides no option to reflect this scenario.

The DWP has confirmed the matter is under investigation and further guidance is expected.

This highlights how quickly payroll legislation continues to evolve and why employers should ensure payroll processes remain compliant and regularly reviewed.

Are You Ready? Day One SSP Is Coming

From April, significant changes under the Employment Rights Act will transform how employers manage sickness absence.

Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) will be payable from Day One, and the Lower Earnings Limit will be removed, meaning all employees will qualify for SSP regardless of their earnings.

For many organisations, this represents a major shift in how short-term absence is handled. With sickness absence already high across many sectors, employers may see increased payroll costs and additional operational pressures.

So what should employers be doing now?

✔ Review and update absence policies to reflect Day One SSP
✔ Ensure payroll systems are ready to calculate SSP from the first day of absence
✔ Train managers to handle absence conversations consistently and supportively
✔ Strengthen return-to-work processes and early wellbeing interventions
✔ Analyse absence data to identify trends and prevent recurring issues

With April fast approaching, this is the time for organisations to ensure policies, payroll systems and management processes are fully prepared.

Taking action now will help businesses stay compliant, manage costs effectively, and minimise disruption when the new rules come into force.

How Employers Can Prepare for SSP Changes Arriving in April 2026

Significant changes to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) are coming into effect from April 2026. SSP will be payable from Day 1 of absence, and the lower earnings limit will be removed, meaning more employees will qualify.

These changes will increase employer responsibility and may impact payroll costs and absence management processes.

How employers can prepare:

• Review and update absence policies
• Ensure payroll systems are ready to process SSP from Day 1
• Train managers to handle absence consistently
• Strengthen return-to-work support procedures
• Monitor absence trends to manage costs and risks

Preparing in advance will help ensure compliance and minimise disruption to your business.

At ETIAS Payroll Services Ltd, we support employers in staying compliant and prepared for payroll legislation changes.

📢 Important Payroll Updates Employers Should Know for 2026–2027

HMRC has announced several key changes that will impact payroll operations. Here are the highlights employers need to prepare for:

🔹 State Pension Age increase – From April 2026, State Pension age will gradually rise to 67. Employers must update National Insurance category letters at the correct time.

🔹 Mandatory payrolling of Benefits in Kind (BiKs) – Payrolling BiKs will become mandatory from April 2027. Employers can still voluntarily register for 2026–2027, but the deadline is 5 April 2026.

🔹 New Student Loan Plan 5 – Introduced from April 2026 with a threshold of £25,000. Employers should watch for new start notices and ensure payroll systems are updated.

🔹 End-of-year reporting reminders – Final FPS/EPS submissions must be completed correctly, and P60s must be issued to employees by 31 May 2026.

🔹 P11D and Benefits reporting – Deadline for submitting P11D and P11D(b) forms is 6 July 2026. Errors or late submissions may result in penalties.

Staying compliant with payroll legislation is essential to avoid penalties and ensure smooth payroll operations.

Payroll today be like… 😮‍💨
One of those days when I had to roll back a payroll — only the second time in 7 years, but still enough to age me instantly.

Uploading payslips: 15 minutes ✔️
Submitting FPS: queued, queued, queued… ⏳

Anyway… glad this day is DONE.
Payroll people, you’ll understand 😭📊
