Not all fibre broadband is quite what it seems.

You’ve probably heard of full fibre and part fibre. They sound pretty similar, but there’s a wee difference worth knowing about. With part fibre, the fibre usually stops at the green cabinet down your street, and the old copper phone line takes over for the last stretch to your home. Full fibre is fibre all the way to your door, with no copper in between.

That last little stretch can make a big difference to the speeds you get at home. So next time you’re comparing deals, check whether it says “full fibre” or “part fibre”. Because when it comes to fibre, the last bit matters, and ours is fibre the whole way right to your door.

“What’s that grey box on my wall?”

It’s where your full fibre arrives at your home. The fibre cable comes from the street, either down from a telegraph pole or up from underground, and finishes in that grey box. Inside it, our engineer joins it to a second fibre cable, which goes through a small 10mm hole in your wall and into the house.

Indoors, that cable plugs into a small box called the ONT (optical network terminal). The ONT turns the light signal coming down the fibre into something your router can use, and the router does the Wi-Fi bit.

So the grey box is basically the front door for your broadband. It protects the join where the cable reaches your home, which helps stop problems further down the line.

Best thing to do with it? Leave it be.
If it ever gets knocked or damaged, give our team a shout on 0800 059 0980.

2.4GHz or 5GHz? What's the difference?

Your router has two Wi-Fi bands and they're both good at different things.

Think of them as two runners. 5GHz is the sprinter. Quick off the mark and better over shorter distances.

2.4GHz is the marathon runner. Not quite as speedy, but it goes further and handles walls a little better.

The good news? You don't usually need to worry about choosing between them. Your router and devices generally sort that out for you.

But sometimes, a gadget needs a little help. Some smart home devices, like doorbell cameras and older bits of tech, only support 2.4GHz. Which might explain why something's refusing to connect.

And if that's happening, we've got you covered. You can set up a separate Wi-Fi network yourself through the GoFibre app if you've got one of our Standard or Advanced routers.

And if you'd rather leave the technical bits to us, that's okay too, give our lovely Customer Support team a call on 0800 059 0980. They can sort it remotely, so you don't have to fiddle with any settings.

A great install starts with good training and good people.
“Professional, knowledgeable and polite.” Exactly how it should be.

Cheers for the lovely review, Steve. 💚

Rhys says the best part of being in Field Sales is helping people save money. Seeing someone realise they could be saving £20 or £30 a month, and what they could do with it, makes it all worthwhile. 💚

And right now, there’s an even better conversation starter: new customers joining GoFibre pay nothing until 2027. 🤯

We recently visited Berwick Animal Rescue Kennels and spent the morning learning about the incredible work the team does to support animals in need.

Our Customer Service Agent, Michael, visited to thank the team for their dedication and to see the fantastic work taking place behind the scenes. It was an inspiring and emotional day, hearing first-hand about the journeys many of the dogs and cats have been on before arriving at the kennels.

Take a look at some of the lovely faces currently waiting for a new home. Could one of them be your perfect match? 🐶🐱

P.S. can we take a moment to appreciate Darcy the English Bulldog's modelling skills? 📸😍

A little further shouldn’t mean left behind.
That’s why we’re building full fibre across rural communities, helping more homes and businesses stay connected to the people, work and everyday things that matter.

Because where you live shouldn’t mean settling for less. 💚

A bit of Scottish drizzle isn’t usually enough to send your Wi-Fi crawling. While water can absorb and weaken radio signals, normal rainfall isn’t usually the main culprit when your Wi-Fi feels slow.

So if your connection suddenly feels sluggish when the rain starts pouring, there’s probably more going on than the weather. Router placement, walls, interference and what everyone at home is doing online can all affect your Wi-Fi experience.
Myth busted. Well… mostly. Got another broadband question? Drop it below. 👇
