✦ Spend LESS TIME creating content ✦

This post took me less than two minutes to bring into existence. The visual component of it? Even less. If you scroll down my feed, you'll find similar posts - separated by time, elegantly dispersed throughout my online presence.

This post was created from a template I made for myself - my own, completely custom. But once I created it... I now get to use it to speed up my processes, without looking like all of my posts are pulled straight from the Canva post library.

Creating your own templates (or having someone create them for you) is the best of all possible social media content creation worlds, honestly. You get templates you can use and REuse, *and* they're completely customized to your own branding. But what if *you* could learn to make those templates for yourself, so that you can implement those skills for every platform you use in your business?

Sound like it would speed up your processes? Spoiler: it will.

And the waitlist for a program that will teach you EXACTLY THAT, is at the link below.

✦ No really, Wordpress is Free ✦

Well, Wordpress.org installed on your own self-hosted server space is. Wordpress.com is NOT.

If you're new to the web world and someone says "just build it on Wordpress" the first thing you do may be to go to wordpress.com and get an account... I mean, that was the first thing I did, way way back in about 2013.

What I didn't know at the time is I could self-host and get access to unlimited plugins, and ALL of the power Wordpress has to offer, on a server space I can upgrade as my needs increase. And... without devoting a massive wad of cash to funding it.

So before you go get an account on Wordpress.com and spend time trying to figure out how to add plugins to your site (hint, you can only add a limited number on Wordpress.com sites)... look into self hosting. It'll save you a TON of headaches down the line!!

✦ There's a fine line here... ✦

Between inspiration, and plaigarism. It is completely, 100%, totally fine (GOOD, even) to be inspired by the work of other creatives, and to use that inspiration to improve your own work.

It is an entirely different can of worms when that inspiration edges into straight up copying someone else's content.

So how can we make sure that we're being inspired responsibly?

1. When you write messaging, start with your brand standards, not someone else's post. If you're inspired by someone's concept, start with a BLANK PAGE when you write your own take on it - don't start with what they said and change things.

2. If you're creating visual, artistic content, use references you've collected from life, and/or from broad sources. All artists use references at some point - but if you're worried that your work is getting too close to what you're using for inspiration, use real life images as inspiration, as opposed to other artists' work. This is a best practice for helping to identify your signature style, as well!

3. Remember that content that is too similar on things like your website and someone else's, is actually bad for EVERYONE. When Google scrapes pages for SEO related content, it doesn't care who wrote it first. If the messaging is word-for-word (or even word-with-some-words-changed) it will mark both sites as duplicates, and it'll hurt your rankings.

4. When you build program contents, start with the needs of your audience, not the contents of a program from someone you admire. No matter how badass that person is, their program is aligned to THEIR audience, not yours. If you start with YOUR audience as the entry point... you don't have to worry about whether it's targeted. Of course it is, because it's inspired by their needs!

5. Create audience aligned branding. If you're starting with your branding as the baseline for your content, whether visual, or written, then an audience aligned, custom brand means that you're not going to match others in your industry. Because you're starting from your own unique origin, not replicating from someone else's.

✦ Apps you NEED ✦

I work a lot. And because I work a lot, I've developed systems that make sure I'm as productive as humanly possible when I'm at my desk. These are just a few of my favourites!

1. Tailwind: This is one I check every day, even though I don't need to. I use it about once a month to schedule my Pinterest pins! But it makes my life SO much easier.
2. Canva: I don't have to tell you how obsessed I am with Canva. It makes my design processes ridiculously faster, and it can do the same for you!
3. Workona: This is one you may not have heard of, but I LOVE it. It's a Chrome tool that essentially turns your multiple windows into a single one, with your tabs all sorted for you!! I use it all day every day now.
4. Honeybook: Honeybook is the CRM to end all CRMs for me. It has every single thing I need, and it makes all of my client processes easier!

So you opened up Canva, to make your next week of IG content.

You’ve got the posts written already, you just need the creative/visual component to pair with it. Some of them are ideal for carousels, and you have those chosen, and some of them are ideal for single slide posts… you’ve done all the groundwork.

But… now you have to design things.

And you’re drawing a blank.

So you stare, and you stare, and you start with a template, but you decide halfway through that you don’t like it, or *insert thing here* isn’t right about it, and you start over.

And before you know it, you’ve got maybe two of the posts done for the week. Problem being, you want five, and you’ve already been in Canva for two hours.

Here’s the thing: You didn’t start your business to spend time designing content. (And if you did, but it’s taking you two hours to create a couple of posts… then there’s different problems happening here, but I digress.) But… even though this isn’t your area of expertise, you want your content to stand out. You know it needs to.

The solution to ALL of these problems? The Canva Accelerator, with me, Gabrielle Scarlett. In the course, we go through everything you need to know about Canva, to use it like a pro. You'll even learn how to create your OWN templates for your business, and how to leverage them well. So you won't HAVE to start with templates from the library anymore, that every business owner under the sun has access to.

Beta pricing is coming soon, and you can get on the wait list NOW, to lock that price in. Beta pricing will ONLY be available to you if you get on that waitlist!!

✦ I'm obsessed with colour palettes... ✦

But these are just a few that I've been EXTRA obsessed with lately - lots of depth in the personal work I've been doing, and these definitely reflect that!

It's been a really, really, REALLY long time since I've had fresh images of myself (like, 2019... I mean a LONG TIME) - and I absolutely have to thank for making these happen!!

Not only did she capture fabulous images, but she made me feel 110% comfortable back in front of the camera again. Basically what I'm trying to say, is she's all out amazing, and makes me want to book another session just because it was so fu***ng fun. So thank you, Poppy, for being a badass, and making me FEEL like a badass again.

The Canva Accelerator is here!! Well... the wait list is. When I first started designing with Canva, a single design took me ages. Honestly, it would genuinely take me hours to work through a couple of Instagram posts - and don't get me started on Pinterest pins.

And that's a natural part of learning a new platform. But... what if you could compress the learning curve? Get access to the tips and tricks I wish I knew when I started (and more)?

That's EXACTLY what The Canva Accelerator will help you do. Compress the learning curve so that you can create even more gorgeous Canva designs, in half the time.

The course itself includes over 35 easily digestible video tutorials, even more written guides, as well as exclusive templates (that I won't be making available anywhere else) to get you started on adding efficiency to your Canva processes.

And the only way to lock in the public beta price, is to follow the link in my bio.

There is all kinds of advice out there about how to plan your social media grids - especially Instagram. Some people staunchly believe that you HAVE to plan your grid in advance. Others staunchly believe that you have to organically allow your grid to evolve on its own. Others say that using a specific pattern has been the key to their success, and if you just do 1, 2, and 3, you’ll see that exact level of growth too.

The truth is, though… none of this works that way. There is no set specific format for your grid that is going to be a magic key to success.

Instagram is a visual platform, sure. But that's not the POINT. The point, is sharing.

So share, and share genuinely. And if it means your grid isn't a checkerboard... so be it.

✦ I don't think I shared enough about working with ✦

We launched a while ago, admittedly. But as I've been on mini-hiatus, I never gave you lot the run down on her project! Kaycee came to me last year through the wonderful . And honestly, from our first meeting I was THRILLED to be trusted with a project that needed such depth and connectivity.

Kaycee shared with me the vision (like, literally a vision - she had it during a meditation!) behind her branding in our initial meeting. And although this doesn't happen often, I can tell you that what we ended with is genuinely an expression of what I saw when she talked me through those components - the depth in the tones used, the veins of gold, the gentle rolling textures... It all came together like magic. Like the visuals were just waiting for me to make them exist.

It doesn't always work that way. But for Kaycee... the imagery was already out there, waiting for us to find it.

So, Kaycee, thank you so, so much for trusting me to bring your branding into the world.

You’re scrolling on Instagram, when suddenly… you see someone’s post. It’s someone you don’t know, just coming up in your feed because of a hashtag you follow. But what caught your eye, is that you recognize something they used in the visual associated with their post.

It’s a watercolor element. Peach and green - kind of fades from one end to the other. Very elegant - gorgeous, honestly.

But… the reason you noticed? You used the same pink and green swoosh in a post last week.

You don’t entirely know why, but you get a sinking feeling. The swoosh was pretty - you saw it in a Canva template, started with that design, and just ran with it. Honestly, you didn’t even think about the fact that… everyone else can see that template too.

Look. I create templates for both free and pro users on Canva, and I will sing the platform’s praises all day long. But when you’re choosing a template directly out of the library, you’re choosing something that literally thousands of other entrepreneurs have free access to, and can also use in their own businesses.

So you’re met with a problem - you want to stand out, but you also don’t want your content to take 12 years to put together from scratch every time you sit down to batch. The best solution to this problem? Where you can get the best of all possible worlds?

Instead of viewing templates as a finished post that you merely need to pop your content into and go, view them as what they truly are: a starting point. Take those templates that match the content type you want to create, and customize them. Change them. Shift them. Align them to YOUR brand standards.

Because no matter what, if you’re following your brand standards, you’re going to have unique content. Full stop.
