It’s quite amazing to see the difference between these stitches before and after this machine had a full service. The three lines of stitches on the left are the same three on the right.

Made in 1895! All this beautiful machine needed was a good dust off, plenty of oil and a new bobbin winder tyre and she’s back to sewing perfectly again.

This week I’ve had three of these gorgeous old girls from the late 1800s. They make a lovely change from the modern ones that normally come in.

See that tiny bit of plastic missing on this bobbin case?

That right there can cause a whole load of problems.

Luckily for this customer, this particular part is still reproduced and they’ll be sewing again just fine.

Replacing parts can extend the life of your machine. Here you can see on the old part how the needle has been continually hitting the bobbin base and scratching it up.

Each little lump and bump can snag the thread and cause a whole range of tension issues and imperfect seams.

Look how clean and smooth the new part looks!

That’s why we recommend servicing your sewing machine regularly. You never know what you’re going to find!

It all looked nice and clean when I had a quick peek: clearly the owner had been keeping it clean… and then I took the cover off and found this!

No wonder she was struggling to sew properly. Some of that lint had formed huge lumps of felt.

Just shows the importance of regularly servicing your sewing machine so that she can have a full clean up!

She’s sewing beautifully now.

I’ve got two absolutely opposite machines on my table today. Other than being sewing machines, I’m not sure these two could be more different. How cute is that tiny tiny one?

Nice to see a friendly face at work…

This little fella is the result of a broken gear that needed replacing. Lucky for my customer, it’s a regular problem with that particular machine, so it was an easy part to find. (But a pain to change out!)

I love making my customers smile.

Today would have been my Gran’s birthday, so it seems appropriate to share a video of her machine now that it’s fully working and sewing so perfectly. I only got her working last week.

Get a load of those straight stitches! These old machines have much straighter and more precise stitching than modern zig-zag machines and are still highly sought-after by quilters.

This stunning machine was registered on 22nd February 1951 and was one of 75,000 registered on the same day. My Gran would have been 23 years old - perhaps it was a birthday present?

The best kind of Sunday afternoon.

This one is very precious to me as it’s the one my Gran used to use. It was very loved then and is very loved now. This machine hasn’t been used for at least 10 years (probably more). It deserves a full spa treatment, don’t you think?

Novum machines were built by Janome and are great quality machines. This one is vintage enough to be well-made internally but modern enough to have all the mod-cons. Easy to service and repair. Easy to find new sewing feet for it too.

Please note the crack in the case. This is only cosmetic and hasn’t impacted the strength of the case. There are a few signs of its age on the machine, but nothing major.

The old singer machines really are workhorses. This little Singer 99k was built in 1957 and was one of 50,000 registered that year. She’s working as well today as she was the day she was made.
