When you're driving, it's important to maintain a good ergonomic position.

This means keeping your spine in alignment and keeping your limbs at a comfortable 90-degree angle.

You should also adjust your seat so that you're not straining to reach the pedals or steering wheel.

Taking these steps will help you stay comfortable and avoid injuries during long periods of driving. In addition, correct seat position can improve your visibility and reaction time, making you a safer driver.

So next time you're behind the wheel, take a moment to adjust your seat and make sure you're in the correct position. Your body will thank you for it.

Your office chair can make a huge difference in terms of ergonomics.

While you're working, an ergonomic chair is made to provide support and comfort, easing the strain on your body. An ergonomic chair might be able to help if you frequently experience musculoskeletal pain.

Additionally, ergonomic chairs can help you maintain better posture and be more alert and focused throughout long workdays. If you want to stay comfortable and productive at work, ergonomic chairs are worth the investment.

Did you know?

Direct laptop use should be restricted to short periods of time due to the stress placed on the body from working in this position. Using a laptop directly on the desktop will cause neck flexion and hunched shoulders as you look down to view screen content.

Simply introducing a laptop stand and an external keyboard and mouse will encourage a neutral posture to be adopted at your workstation.

Workplace ergonomics encompasses a wide range of factors, from the arrangement of the furniture to how tasks are carried out. For instance, by supporting the spine, an ergonomic office chair can aid in the reduction of back pain. The strain on the neck and eyes can also be lessened with the use of adjustable desks and monitors. Additionally, ergonomic office supplies like keyboards and mice can help prevent repetitive stress injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome.

Workplace safety and productivity can both be significantly improved by implementing ergonomic principles. Businesses can give their employees a more comfortable and effective working environment by making minor adjustments to the way work is done.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are a leading cause of lost work time and disability.
There are a few things you can do to reduce your risk of MSDs at work:

✅ Use good posture and lift objects properly.
✅ Take regular breaks to stretch and move around.
✅ Use tools and equipment that fit your body size and strength.
✅ Be aware of how your workstation is set up—make sure there’s ample room for you to move around, and that things like your keyboard and mouse are within easy reach.

If you already have an MSD, it’s important to get treatment early. This will help you recover more quickly and prevent the condition from getting worse. You should also talk to your employer about making changes to your job so that it’s less likely to aggravate your condition.

Employers must protect workers from the risks of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) being caused or made worse by work. MSDs include injuries and conditions that affect the back, joints and limbs. https://bit.ly/3Om4iij

The Labour Force Survey confirmed in 2020/21 musculoskeletal disorders accounted for 28% of all work related ill health cases. This highlights why it is so important that workplaces manage the risks that their workforce face.

Repetitive motion is the leading cause of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in the workplace.

Even if a person follows all of the ergonomic guidelines to the letter, repeatedly performing the same movement will result in stress and, eventually, injury. The best way to deal with this problem is to switch tasks.

Doing something else and performing a different movement, even if only for a short time, will reduce the risk of injury to stressed tissues. People should change their neutral position on a regular basis if changing the task isn't possible.

When it comes to your monitors, or any other viewing device, distance and height must be appropriate.

Monitors and other display devices should be placed so that the person using them can see them clearly. Squinting or straining your neck should not be required when viewing a screen.

With good ergonomics, people should not turn their necks left, right, up, or down to view a screen. This principle applies to both basic users with a single monitor and advanced users with multiple screens.

While proper keyboard and mouse setup is often overlooked when it comes to maintaining a neutral body position, it is just as important as posture.

People will lose their neutral position if they reach for the mouse at an incorrect angle or if they have to break the parallel in-line rule for elbows and wrists. Excessive fatigue and, after prolonged exposure, injury can result from reaching into input devices.

Without violating any of the neutral positioning rules, keyboards and mice should be placed where they can be accessed. Furthermore, both devices must be customised to the individual who uses them. This may necessitate adjustable devices or multiple devices for different users.

Flexibility is the key.

Our final option this week is to take a look at the combined keyboard and mouse.

This replicates the setup of a laptop with the trackpad centralised, below the keypad. Again, this enables the use of the input device, without any gripping of the hand or twisting at the forearm and wrist and without the shoulder being held in an outstretched position.
