Are you , are or have gaps in paying national insurance (NI)?

I was recently teaching a course (not about pensions!) and a conversation came up where several people said they didn’t realise that your was reliant on a certain number of years NI contributions.

To receive at least part of a state you need to have paid 10 complete years of NI before you retire, and to receive the full state pension you need to have paid 35 complete years.

We had a conversation about paying National Insurance, NI and pensions. I’m not a pensions adviser and it can be complicated, so it can be worth getting advice if you’re trying to figure out what to do. Currently the age is 67 to receive the state pension, you need to have made full NI contributions for 35 years. You can check the number of years you have currently made at this website https://www.gov.uk/check-national-insurance-record

You are able to pay voluntary contributions to add additional years contributions and to top up a year’s contributions if it’s not complete. You can generally backdate contributions for 6 years.

is good at explaining financial things! He has written a page that is good for explaining your options to pay voluntary contributions. Do check particularly section 3 where it lists out certain circumstances where you may be eligible to get some years where the contribution is paid for you e.g. if caring for a child, if unemployed etc https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/savings/voluntary-national-insurance-contributions/

If you are thinking wider than just paying your NI & want to consider other pension options, it can be complex. Martin Lewis’ website can be a good place to start. The bit for self employed is section 14, so perhaps skip straight to that section if you’re self-employed ! https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/savings/discount-pensions/

Are you thinking about setting up business on your own?
Do you Need to Register as Self-Employed?

This is a question lots of people ask me! They don’t know if its relevant to them or when they need to do it.

Firstly there are several names / terms for working for yourself but they all mean the same thing:

Who has to register as self employed?
You need to set up as a sole trader with HMRC if you have earned more than £1,000 from self-employment or property income between 6 April and 5 April in any year.

When must I register?
You must register by 5 October after the end of the tax year in which you start trading.
e.g. if you started trading in the summer of 2025, you must register before 5 October 2026 .

What info will I need to hand when registering?
In addtion to personal details you will need:

Your National Insurance Number
ID to be able to verify your ID.
