Commercial EPCs use carbon metrics, sometimes creating surprising outcomes for running costs. Our blog outlines the MEES landscape, why EPC ratings can be misleading for bills, and what actions landlords and tenants should consider to protect value and comply with regulations -

This is fascinating and highlights the issues and importance surrounding MEES and EPCs.The link between a poor Energy Performance Certificate rating and energy bills has always been there, but because of the Commercial EPC's metric being carbon-based and not financially-based, a better EPC rating wi...

De-coupling day to day electricity costs from gas-generated electricity will be a game-changer and great to see that this is being brought up and will be brought into the system sooner rather than later.

The phrase 'gas-generated electricity' sounds a bit confusing, why should it impact on the cost of electricity overall? account for the majority of electricity generation in the UK overall and if bills were based fully on them then bills would be significantly lower than they are now; the issue though is that electricity prices are based on the last unit needed to meet demand - this last unit is usually gas-generated...so whenever gas prices spike (i.e. like now) then electricity costs are hit, and hit hard.

So moving away from this system to one that doesn't use gas-generated electricity costs as much, or at all, will make a big difference to bills and put more emphasis on the use of like solar and wind, ensuring network connections and is in place to further increase the % of renewables on the grid, reducing and costs.

Also great to see that this sort of news is making front page headlines where it belongs.

The key line for us was this; "If electricity is expensive, households and businesses have little incentive to make the switch. If it is cheaper, the transition becomes easier - and faster."

A lot of us in the industry have been banging on about it but whilst electricity is so expensive, it just is not financially viable to use it as a main heating source in the UK (particularly when the majority of our building stock is old and poorly insulated).

It's not as straightforward as 'well, just make electricity cheap then' as this article delves into, but it is the solution to the problem - we just need to get to the solution.

From heat pumps to offshore wind, the UK’s net zero push is facing growing scrutiny. Are rising costs undermining climate goals?

Not saying Badenoch is an idiot but...she does realise that wherever the oil comes from, it belongs to the companies that extract it, not to the country that they're selling it to? I.e. 'Get Britain Drilling' is no more secure or cheaper than the current situation...not to mention the little issue of catastrophic carbon emissions associated with going down this route?

https://www.edie.net/labour-and-conservatives-at-odds-over-energy-security-as-badenoch-launches-get-britain-drilling-campaign/?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=edie_daily_news_alert_31-03-2026&utm_content=edie_daily_news_alert_31-03-2026+CID_03d1ae902e6de1f7db34977a06d1362d&utm_source=campaign%20monitor&utm_term=Labour%20and%20Conservatives%20at%20odds%20over%20energy%20security%20as%20Badenoch%20launches%20Get%20Britain%20Drilling%20campaign

The UK Government and the Conservative opposition have set out starkly contrasting visions for tackling the energy price crisis, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves urging the G7 to follow Britain's lead on renewables and Kemi Badenoch campaigning for more North Sea oil and gas drilling.

Welsh Govt to mandate solar on all new domestic buildings from 2027 - huzzah!

https://www.solarpowerportal.co.uk/solar-projects/wales-to-mandate-rooftop-solar-on-new-builds?utm_source=eloqua&utm_medium=email&utm_content=NL_SPP_NL_03122026&sp_eh=f99b34dbc053377007929aa96cf1e81c1c6098dcd316a42f3906a26d0bda1206

Could they have gone further? Why not ALL new buildings including commercial?
Same with the Future Homes Standard coming into force in England, with a similar 'promise' (but likely to take place), but just for domestic buildings. Don't commercial developments count?

The Welsh government has unveiled plans to effectively mandate rooftop solar power on new buildings.

"UK Govt. can deliver...net-zero target for less than it spent responding to the energy price crisis resulting from the Russia-Ukraine war" - official climate advisors have concluded.

https://www.edie.net/ccc-uks-net-zero-transition-can-cost-less-than-managing-one-energy-price-crisis/?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=edie_daily_news_alert_11-03-2026&utm_content=edie_daily_news_alert_11-03-2026+CID_d5ec660957e5cecd9adbeda7da88dad7&utm_source=campaign%20monitor&utm_term=CCC%20UKs%20net-zero%20transition%20can%20cost%20less%20than%20managing%20one%20energy%20price%20crisis

So for the cost of ONE energy crisis event, the entirety of the UK's net-zero target could be met.

As we're seeing right now, energy crises are just that, plural. But because we're still so intrinsically linked (i.e. we're dependent upon) fossil fuel imports, we will continue to be hit by events that, on the surface at least, have little to do with us (just ask those panic-buying fuel or when one peruses the many many graphs showing gas price spikes).

A no-brainer to invest in net-zero (and beyond, critically) then, surely? Moving away from fossil-fuel based imports, relying on our own greener (increasingly so with additional renewables over time), secure network and reducing electricity costs to the customer must be the focus.

The UK Government can deliver its long-term net-zero target for less than it spent responding to the energy price crisis resulting from the Russia-Ukraine war, its official climate advisors have concluded.

If world leaders won't do it, we will - the message from businesses who have unlocked over $200bn of opportunities, they're making a difference.

Too often we sit on the sidelines and think 'ah, it's somebody else's problem' - is everybody's problem; we've all played our part in one or the other, wittingly or not - now it's time to reverse that, time to make a difference.

This is making national news and rightly so - but is it the silver bullet the Govt are saying it is?
Nuclear power will always be divisive; we all know what can happen when things go wrong, however in reality, statistically, fossil fuel-based operations are far more risky and of course have carbon emissions attached.
The two big questions surrounding this latest nuclear power announcement are;
1) What about nuclear waste? This often gets (almost literally) swept under the carpet - and despite all the decades of research, a satisfactory answer has still not yet been reached.
2) What about other options? Ynys Mon (Anglesey) has a vast, rugged (and beautiful) coastline, perfect for wind, wave and tidal renewable energy; aren't these worth investing billions into instead?

https://www.edie.net/north-wales-to-host-uks-first-small-modular-nuclear-reactor-project/?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=edie_daily_news_alert_13-11-2025&utm_content=edie_daily_news_alert_13-11-2025+CID_86de82c8b4d20bb436d060e7e2fa363f&utm_source=campaign%20monitor&utm_term=North%20Wales%20to%20host%20UKs%20first%20small%20modular%20nuclear%20reactor%20project

Anglesey in North Wales will host the first small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) project in the UK, creating 3,000 jobs and potentially billions in investment over the next 10 years.

Businesses foresee 15% revenue reduction from climate inaction - so they best do something about it, right?
Well, only 1 in 3 are.
This is across the globe by the way.
It's hardly news, but maybe it is to some, that reducing carbon emissions, saving energy, also reduces costs; funds that can then be used for business purposes, rather than chucking them out of the (open whilst the heating's on) window...
And it starts with such basics; dialling down the thermostat by 1 degree, switching lights off, turning stuff off - all things that cost zero but can save masses. It's amazing how many places we see where such basics are not followed.

https://www.edie.net/businesses-foresee-15-reduction-in-revenues-from-climate-inaction-ey-finds/?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=edie_daily_news_alert_11-11-2025&utm_content=edie_daily_news_alert_11-11-2025+CID_d8f1be09fb354d7c65f3025c58969011&utm_source=campaign%20monitor&utm_term=Businesses%20foresee%2015%20reduction%20in%20revenues%20from%20climate%20inaction%20EY%20finds

Polling of hundreds of large businesses across the world, conducted by EY, has revealed that they expect climate inaction to cost 15% of their annualised revenue on average. Yet only one in three are meaningfully assessing an array of climate-related risks.

I mean this is hardly shocking news but these people just don't care do they? So long as their wallets are stuffed evermore with dirty cash, that's all that matters.

Of course they're backed by the banks too...

You may think, well, what can I do about it?

Check your bank's involvement - if they're going to be involved in this hashtag then just switch to another bank who isn't intent on destroying the planet. Same with your pension or any investments, just check, what are they actually investing in?

Fossil fuel companies and state-owned energy firms are collectively planning fossil fuel extraction projects which would collectively emit more than 11 times the world’s remaining carbon budget in a 1.5C scenario.
