Are you looking forward to Wednesday?
We are looking forward to the budget if only to find out what the Chancellor's plans are. There has been so much speculation and comment in the press, that nothing seems to be off the table.
Once we have the details of what is in the budget - whether we like it or not - we will be able to start to plan. The last few weeks we have seen activity stall as decisions are being put off, quite rightly, until the economic landscape is revealed.
Businesses can cope with bad news, but hate uncertainty. Once we know the worst, we can make a plan and either come out stronger, or wait it out until the good times return. Either way come Wednesday we will have a better idea of what we will have to deal with.
.
btw we help business owners plan for their success, whatever the economic climate.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day at the Voco Hotel today talking to other business owners and organisations that support start ups and small businesses.
Thank you to Kerry and Mandy for all your hard work putting this together to put Corby on the map. Angela was pleased to hear the Five Ways principles explained back to her from my talk first thing in the morning. Great to see that someone listened and learnt this basic principle of business success.

I've been thinking a lot about the critical numbers in my own business and here is what I have come up with.
We need to measure the activity that will drive the result we are aiming for. If we are going to do nothing with the measurement, we don't need it! Look first at the result you are aiming to achieve and then work out what you need to measure to ensure that the activity happens to make that result a reality.
This will be different in every business and in every department within a business, but it will also change over time and as the goals change.
Have no more than three critical numbers - so make them count. The other numbers and measures are important, don't forget them, but the critical numbers need real focus and attention. What is measured is managed and what is managed improves.
What are your critical numbers?
If you would like to explore your critical numbers, book in with me for a coffee and we can find out what you should measure.
I sometimes feel sorry for those who run the 5k in 15 minutes - they don't get any time to think! Trotting along at the back, I get plenty of time to think, and inevitably my thoughts turn to business. So here are a couple of things I thought about last Saturday as I ran along the banks of Rutland Water reservoir.
1 - sometimes it is good to see things from a different perspective. My glasses steamed up about five minutes into the race, so I had to take them off and run blind! I could see well enough to know where I was going and not run into the water, or trip over anything but not enough to see the faces of those running the other way, so I apologise if I didn't acknowledge you as you lapped me. In business it is often useful to take off our normal glasses and see things differently, you concentrate on different things and get a fresh perspective, new insights come from looking at things differently.
2 - the importance of critical numbers. At Rutland water, the course is marked by Anglian Water, so you know how far you have run and how far you have to go. This isn't the case at all other Park Runs and this has caught me out before as my watch is on the blink, and I have no idea of my place in the run. (Of course there is another lesson here about using equipment that actually works, but let's save that for another day.)
Back to critical numbers, for me the numbers I need to know when running a 5k are my pace, so I don't go off faster than I can run and exhaust myself, or not run as fast as I know I can; my overall time, so I can push myself to get a specific goal; and the distance covered, again so I can monitor my run. In business there will be critical numbers, and these will be different for each business, even each department. Know what yours are - they usually reflect activity that drives results.
3 - the power of a team. As always at ParkRun, I am humbled by the volunteers who turn up week after week, to help, to organise, to cheer and to make sure the event happens. They work together and together something marvellous has come out of an event at Bushy Park 21 years ago. Never underestimate how far you can go when your team believes in your vision.
If you are wondering how to apply these lessons to your business, lets grab a coffee and explore - I promise you don't have to run anywhere!

It starts with sales.
In business nothing happens until somebody sells something, whether that is an idea for funding or a product or service for profit.
If your sales and marketing efforts are an afterthought, tagged onto to your core offering, you are missing a vital piece of the puzzle.
We sometimes focus too much on cost cutting when things are tough, but we should put more of effort into increasing the income. If your bottom line is not where you want it to be, consider what more you could do around increasing revenue. By no means overspend, but don't cut core activities.
If you would like to talk to someone in confidence about the state of your business or how you can increase revenue, book into speak to Rupert or Angela who can help you see your business differently.

When I was growing up, we didn't celebrate Guy Fawkes Night - we were allowed to watch the fireworks from the windows, but being from a Roman Catholic family, celebrating the demise of a catholic plot didn't appear to be quite the thing. Things changed, as my children were growing up, I used to help run a fireworks display every year.
Now I am a dog owner, and I am reverting to not participating in fireworks as they are so terrifying to many pets - seeing the stress this annual event puts on our beloved pets has made me question the worth. The constant and irregular setting off of fireworks at this time of the year, leaves them and me stressed.
I would love to see fireworks in private and domestic settings banned and the festivities confined to public displays that are for a finite period only. So if you are setting off fireworks tonight or at the weekend, please consider your neighbourhood, and especially their pets.
How about this year we concentrate on setting a rocket off in your business instead! What would need to happen to your business to set off the fireworks?
