Sadly, said goodbye to an old friend and colleague today. Some of you may remember Ron Percy of Downleigh Stained Glass, Lewdown (left in this photo). We worked together on a number of stained glass projects together until his retirement in 2013. Here, in 2012, along with Julie and I, we had just been presented to Camilla, when she was the Duchess of Cornwall, after we had restored all of the windows in Launceston Town Hall. He was such a lovely man and it was a privilege to have worked with him. RIP Percy

A change of scenery for me, my first job in north Devon. Have just started work on the windows of St John the Baptist Church at Meshaw near South Molton, involving the replacement of corroded hopper vents and saddle bars plus general repairs.

Spent the last week working in beautiful St. Ives, restoring the stained glass in the old chapel home of the Kidz R Us Theatre in a makeshift studio in the building, which is being skilfully renovated by Shaun Rothwell’s team from Rothwell Historic Restoration with the help of Clare Macness of Hireth Architects. The work has involved removing twenty sections from five windows and restoring and cleaning each in turn while the wooden frames are restored or replaced.

The windows are all from around the middle of the 20th century and employed some beautiful glass and craftsmanship. The idea is to backlight them so they can be seen from the outside.

The strangest thing, there were three stained glass windows I inspected on the St. Ives job that had been covered by black-out blinds many years ago. When they were taken down, look what appeared on the other side - the Turin shrouds of Cornwall! Obviously the painted sections of the stained glass reduced the fading of the material at different rates.

Long trek down west today to look at a couple of jobs, one in St. Ives, the other near Helston. The roadworks were tedious as ever, can’t wait for the new stretch of the A30 to open in June! Interesting places and people made the effort worthwhile however.
