🦠 Equine Influenza Update – 14/05/2026

The latest update from the Equine Infectious Disease Surveillance (EIDS) network was released today and has highlighted continued widespread Equine Influenza activity across the UK. Additionally, we are aware of some confirmed but unreported cases within the Vale of Glamorgan.

Since the beginning of April 2026:
- 60 laboratory confirmed outbreaks have been identified across 34 counties
- Further outbreaks are still awaiting confirmation and reporting approval
- 58% of outbreaks involved horses with a recent travel history
- Most affected horses were unvaccinated

This serves as an important reminder of how quickly Equine Influenza can spread, particularly at a time of year where horses are travelling to competitions, training venues, sales, clinics and other multi-horse environments more frequently.

Key things owners can do to help prevent the spread of influenza:
- Ensure vaccinations are up to date
- Monitor horses closely for an increased temperature or signs of respiratory disease
- Isolate new arrivals appropriately
- Review yard biosecurity measures carefully

It is also important to remember that Equine Influenza may spread locally, even without direct horse movement.

If your horse develops symptoms such as coughing, nasal discharge, lethargy or fever, or if you would like more advice regarding biosecurity, please contact the office for advice on 01834860871.

A method by which horse manure can be converted into a sustainable product that could be a substitute for some plastics is in development – and the early signs are very promising. Read more below

I can definitely relate to this, happy winter solstice and here’s to a tad more day light. Xx

I can definitely relate to this, happy winter solstice and here’s to a tad more day light. Xx

🌑 Winter Solstice in the UK 🌑

Today marks the shortest day of the year… which means from tomorrow onwards we’re officially clawing back daylight one muddy boot at a time 🙌

Today’s plan for horse owners:

Arrive at the yard in the dark
Briefly witness daylight (for about 7 minutes)
Leave the yard… still in the dark

And the horses? Absolutely BUZZING about it:

Fresh as anything, auditioning for “Spooky Olympics 2025”
Apparently every hedge is suspicious
Meanwhile we’re just trying to locate the gate without falling in a puddle

Here’s to longer days… eventually 😄❄️

This lovely post popped up on my news feed and quite simply brightened up my day. Thought the picture was from a bygone era, then on closer inspection realised it was from Kimpton Horse Show 2025. Just great to see. Xx

Kimpton Horse Show 2025 was wonderful as always. A show that is always in our calendar.

A moment that brought a tear to my eye, was watching the amazing judge, Colin, with this little girl and her pony. They had a good chat in the individual show, she actually went onto win the class, she did an amazing job with her pony. This is exactly what these showing shows are about and what we need - we need these little people to feel welcomed and supported and Colin did that and so much more💜

Very grateful to have had the opportunity to watch great partnerships between horse & rider in the morning session, especially being able to see the incredible craftsmanship of armour up close.

A kind plea, please please be responsible for disposing balloons, these descended out of no where and caused mayhem with three horses, although superficial injuries to two of them, very grateful it wasn’t it was nothing major, with thanks on finally a lovely Summers Solstice. Xx

A large crowd of draft horses congregated at the famous Kelpies sculptures in Scotland today in honor of the upcoming 10th anniversary of the installations.
𝘐𝘔𝘈𝘎𝘌: Peter Sandground

The Kelpies, towering at a height of 100ft and weighing over 300 tonnes each, are a remarkable man-made marvel and a testament to engineering prowess. These magnificent sculptures, crafted by artist Andy Scott, have become iconic landmarks, taking inspiration from the Clydesdale horses Duke and Baron, symbols of a bygone era. Symbolizing the legacy of Scotland's heavy horse in industry and economy, the Kelpies were the driving force behind the wagons, ploughs, barges, and coalships that shaped Falkirk's landscape.

The name "Kelpies" pays homage to the mythical creatures known for their immense strength and endurance, embodying the transformative changes in the region's landscapes, the resilience of its waterways, and the fortitude of its communities. The Kelpies are open to the public throughout the year, free of charge, thanks to their strategic location in The Helix park. The surrounding area has been thoughtfully designed to ensure accessibility for all, allowing everyone to admire these colossal sculptures up close. For an exclusive glimpse into their engineering and ingenuity, visitors can even embark on a tour inside one of the Kelpies. Before concluding your visit, make sure to explore the visitor center, which offers a gift shop, a café, and further information about these magnificent creations.
