There is one that I am asked regularly

"How can I manage overwhelm?"

Here some of the tips that I often share ⬇️

1️⃣ Knowing who and what you spend your time on can help you clear space if you're feeling overwhelmed. I use the “wheel of life” to help people really see what they spend time and energy on and it’s never where they think it is!

2️⃣ Create 3 lists - one for work, one for family/house/children and one for you. Then write down all the actions you need to take. Do one from each column each day, if the tasks are big, or life is busy, just do one task daily.

3️⃣ If you’re repeating the same patterns and life feels the same no matter what you do - you’re probably blind to what’s stopping you. To overcome this, use a “Hope Map” - set a goal, write 3 actions you need to take to get there, and then identify what obstacles stop you from taking the action. Then think - how would you overcome that obstacle if you could do anything? This opens up new creative thinking.

4️⃣ If you feel like everything is going wrong - you’re probably in a hyper-vigilant state. We are programmed towards negative thinking to keep us safe and we need 5 positive thoughts to counteract 1 negative thought! The best way to start is each morning as soon as you wake up and then just as you go to sleep at night, think of 5 very simple things you are grateful for - such as a warm bed, family, kindness from a friend etc. at these times the brain is in a more plastic state and the positive thoughts are magnified.

Summer holidays ☀️.

A time to enjoy picnics, day trips to museums or adventure parks. What bliss!

But if you are a parent with ADHD and/or have a child with ADHD, it can all feel hugely overwhelming. It can be a nightmare! 😱

Getting everyone up, fed and dressed and organised and into the car, can feel like too many steps. And you’ve not even crossed your front door yet 🤯.

I hear you.

So I’ve put together some ideas to reduce the overwhelm.

⭐️Routine - even though school is out, sticking to a schedule cuts overwhelm

⭐️Plan Ahead - knowing exactly what you are doing, when and where is crucial

⭐️Prepare in Advance - have you got the snacks packed?

⭐️Be kind to yourself - don’t be hard on yourself. You’re doing the best that you can and that’s good enough

If it all feels like too much, remember to unplug, even if you just sit in the garden with a book and a cuppa for 10 mins.

Remember that self-care is the fuel which keeps those energy levels going.

“Genuinely – I don’t – I just don’t have the time for it even though I think it will be great.”

I hear this all the time – it’s what many people say to explain why they haven’t taken action on something they wanted to do, or why they said no to the opportunity they wanted to leap at, or why they don’t say yes to coaching.

Lack of time is real. Time is one of life’s precious commodities, and meeting work, children and family needs alone can take up most of our available hours.

Who and what we give our time to says so much to the world about what we value, but it’s so easy to get sucked into spending time on the stuff that needs doing but doesn’t serve us.

But can we really control our time in a way that works for us?

The answer is absolutely ⬇️

🎯 Look at all areas of your life and work out how much time each of them takes and then prioritise

🎯 Is there a workaround for your immediate demands such as childcare? Can you buddy up with a friend and exchange time covering each other's childcare?

🎯 Prioritise. Prioritise. Prioritise. Decide what is most important to you on any given day - is it a walk or is it reading a book?

🎯 If going to the gym is a must for you, can you cut down on travel time by going somewhere closer to the school drop-off?

People come to me for support with all sorts of things. Whether it’s a problem with moving forward with their business, self-limiting beliefs holding them back, or even juggling a fulfilling career while supporting a child with additional needs.

Here are some examples of life and work challenges that Coaching can be incredibly helpful to solve:

💫 Personal Growth – hitting tough times in life where we need to reassess where we want or what we need to thrive

And this is how Avita Coaching started.

A friend grabbed me on a typical, uneventful rainy day a few years ago as we dropped our children at school.

“I need to find a way forward that’s going to allow me to be the parent I want and need to be, whilst allowing me to follow my dreams for a fulfilling career. I think you’re the person to help me do it – will you?”

She had complex family needs, had left an esteemed profession to care for her children and enjoyed being a full-time mother. But she also wanted to get back to a job which mentally challenged her and met her values, whilst remaining the mother she wanted to be.

I had been in a similar position to her – complicated child needs (1 dyslexic, 2 ADHD), enjoying interesting and challenging work but needing to find the best combination and balance. I had always been drawn to and interested in Coaching, positive psychology and overall holistic health – perhaps this was a signal to pursue those interests further?

Fast forward a few years, and I’ve done just that – found the best in the world in Coaching, Positive Psychology, NLP and Hypnotherapy and learnt directly from them. I’ve transformed my life as a result and helped so many others including that friend above.

Those of you who have been following me for a while, know how my morning walks mean everything to me. They are such a big part of my day.

I love switching my phone off and enjoying a long, peaceful walk with the dogs. As I said last week - just me, the dogs, the birds and the trees.

My job means I am often at my desk in front of my computer screen, so I welcome the breaks where I can step away and move my body.

So, I am so proud to support the Mental Health Foundation this Mental Health Awareness Week – 13 to 19 May.

This year’s theme is movement: moving more for our mental health.

So please comment below ⬇️ with a picture of yourself in movement whether it's a walk to the shops, a walk on the beach, or a yoga class.... Whatever you are doing that means you are moving your body is good enough. So please do share with me ⬇️.
