"Scientists have discovered a chemical phase of sulfur that stops battery degradation. They were so shocked by the discovery that they checked 100 times to ensure the result was real.

As with most accidental discoveries, the scientists haven’t yet figured out what is actually happening. So further research is needed.

If successful, lithium-sulfur batteries could give electric vehicles a range of thousands of miles."

Which also means that batteries will last much longer before they need to be replaced, which reduces the drain on our finite natural resources. (And lowers prices.)

A lucky discovery involving lithium-sulfur batteries has a legitimate chance to revolutionize how we power our world.

Just in time has changed to just in case.

"With supply chains becoming more complex and natural disasters disrupting them more often, “you have to reinvent ‘just in time’,” says Oscar de Bok, who runs DHL’s supply chain business. “You can’t plan it as lean any more as you wanted it in the past.”"

It's finally reached the mainstream:

"Sustainability is becoming the business itself and not a separate agenda. Corporations need to re-think all part of the business, redesigning and redefining their strategy and operational processes to meet the changes, needs and expectations of the market and society alike that support long-term value."

Given the crisis facing nature, it is easy to give up hope.

Yet around the globe wetlands are being rebuilt, deforestation is slowing (in some places), and numbers of some of our rarest creatures are rising.

People are making this change happen.

Earth Optimism is happening in conjunction with the Cambridge Festival between 26 March and 4 April 2021.

In other words, NOW.

Earth Optimism is a worldwide movement aimed at fundamentally shifting how we frame the environmental narrative, from one of doom and gloom to one focused on solutions and success.

"No country in the world currently meets the basic needs of its citizens at a globally sustainable level of resource use."

This research quantifies the national resource use associated with achieving a good life in more than 150 countries. It shows that -- at the efficiencies with which we currently use resources -- meeting the basic needs of everyone on the planet would lead humanity to pass several environmental limits.

This interactive map plots national performance on seven environmental sustainability indicators together with eleven minimum social thresholds for a good life.

Use the BIOPHYSICAL tab to see the biophysical boundaries that countries currently transgress and the SOCIAL tab to see the social thresholds that they currently achieve.

Where we need to get to is that no nation passes any biophysical boundary and all minimum social thresholds are met.

Use this interactive world map to see the number of biophysical boundaries that different countries transgress in comparison to the number of social thresholds that they achieve.

Welcome to the future.

The world's second largest retailer is experimenting with party dresses for hire, clothes repairs, and a beauty salon.

It is rethinking its stores as playing an integrated role in the logistics of online selling. What kind of experiences are there in a store? Are there different formats? "It is all about building the relationship with the customer."

At the same time, the pandemic has forced increased use of technology. But this now enables designers, suppliers, and the production office to produce new clothes together, rather than waiting for one to send a garment to another.

Accessories can now go from conception to store in a few weeks, T-shirts in six weeks, and trousers in eight.

And with good data providing strong customer insight, you can act much more quickly.

The chief executive, Helena Helmersson, is a former head of sustainability at H&M and is the first CEO to be appointed from outside the family.

“18 months ago . . . only 25 per cent of the world had a decarbonisation horizon. Today, 75 per cent of the world economy has a decarbonisation horizon. This is a major shift.”

New power structures will emerge along with the transition. “The [old] levers of control, a lot of them will dissipate and simply cease to exist,” “A new class of energy exporters may emerge on the global scene.”

China is the current winner -- in buying mines for cobalt etc, in developing battery technology, in 'helping' countries develop their own renewable energy sources. (Though they still emit a lot of CO2.)

And once we are post-oil there will be less need for war.

Whether the transition will be fast enough is another matter.

As the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy gathers speed, what does it mean for the balance of power?
