Yesterday we had a great evening with the Rhodes Incubator’s Venture Teams. The session’s focus was on the social lean canvass. Chris Blues from Skoll Foundation presented case studies and used examples of social enterprises to explain the canvass approach to business planning. We were also graced with the presence of Dr Jessica Price who is one of the RI co-founders.

Our next session is Tuesday, 26th November from 5-7pm. Come and listen to the teams talking about their ideas. It is an opportunity to learn and give feedback at the same time.

Our first Incubate Session took place today. We had a talk and a presentation on rough prototype design. RI provides a great opportunity for Rhodes Scholars to explore how to build new initiatives that respond to challenges that face our world today.

Today we celebrate Evelyn Chan, Rhodes Alum (Victoria & Hertford, 2011) and founder of Smileyscope, a healthcare startup that is transforming pediatric care using virtual reality. Evelyn was one of the founders who went on our inaugural Silicon Valley Trip last September. Evelyn and Smileyscope recently won the 2019 SXSW Impact Pediatric Health competition in Texas! Rhodes Incubator is pleased to host Tshilidzi Marwala who is Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Johannesburg for a talk on AI on the 28th. Previously, he was Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at the same university.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is characterised by making systems and machines intelligent and connected. The underlying technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution include artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain. AI enables machines to learn, adapt, evolve and optimise, and has had a profound impact in diverse fields such as engineering, medical sciences and social sciences. In this lecture, Prof Marwala shall explore applications of the fourth industrial revolution technologies to engineering, social sciences and medical problems. The implications of these on society as well as the underlying costs are also explored.

The Oxford Foundry organised a roundtable session with Robbie Brozin, founder of Nandos. RI team members from Southern Africa were able to engage with Robbie about building a business that went from one chicken restaurant in Johannesburg to over one thousand stores globally in the space of two decades.

Meet Martin-Immanuel Bittner, a physician and cancer researcher, who was one of the founders who travelled to Silicon Valley on our inaugural signature trip of entrepreneurial discovery in September. He had this to say about his trip.

‘For me, being part of the Rhodes Incubator trip primarily meant to travel and interact with a group of highly motivated entrepreneurs and to get to know a range of organisations in Silicon Valley doing amazing work at the intersection of technology and society.’
