🚀 New BFPA Special Interest Group Membership

The BFPA has launched a new Special Interest Group (SIG) Membership category, bringing together organisations and individuals with a shared interest in fluid power and related technologies.

The programme gives end users, manufacturers, technical specialists, educators and researchers a collaborative space to share knowledge, exchange ideas and explore emerging technologies - all while contributing to future industry guidance and discussion.

Initial focus areas include fluid power safety, reliability and maintenance, sustainability, motion control, hydrogen technologies, skills development, digitalisation and innovation.

The Foundation Course in Working Safely with Hydraulic Hose and Connectors is designed as either an excellent induction for someone new to the industry or a superb safety course for people who are not primarily hydraulic or fluid power technicians but work from time to time on machinery containing hydraulic components.

This theoretical course contains video examples outlining the associated dangers of fluid/pressure injection injuries and examples of hoses being manufactured from the raw components.

On completion a high quality course reference book, training certificate and card helps establish that both the attendee and employer are confidently adopting correct working methods within a safety awareness culture.

The BFPA are able to deliver this foundation course onsite at a customer’s facility with a dedicated meeting room and WIFI to a group of employees or online via our interactive trainer lead sessions.

Wendy brings extensive experience in business operations, administration, training and customer support across a range of industries, and will play a key role in supporting the BFPA's ongoing development and member services.

With 15 years of fluid power industry experience and the last four years delivering BFPA training courses, Simon brings a wealth of practical knowledge, technical expertise, and a genuine passion for developing engineering skills across the sector.

Having worked with several leading fluid power companies across the UK, Simon has helped hundreds of engineers and technicians build the confidence and competence needed to work safely and effectively with hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

⚠️ We have recently been informed that the Health and Safety Executive NorthernIreland (HSENI) have carried out a visit to a BFPA member facility during which the requirement to implement guarding on hose swagingmachines was raised.

Despite the member presenting reasonable and practical arguments – specifically the challenges associated with:
⚫ Varying hose types,
⚫ Different fittings, and
⚫ The ability to operate swaging machines from both the front and rear,
HSENI have advised that failure to implement suitable guarding will result in issuing of a Prohibition Notice.

For clarity, a Prohibition Notice is a legal order requiring the immediate cessation of an activity where there is deemed to be a risk of serious personal injury. As a result, the member is now having to explore engineered solutions to comply with the requirement or risk enforcement action.

✅ Engaging with swaging machine manufacturers to understand potential technical solutions
✅Raising this matter with our HSE contacts in England to seek clarification and alignment on expectations.
