Where do we get our ecological products?

At Bovey Larder we often get asked this question and one of our favourite suppliers is a social enterprise based in Oxfordshire called Sesi. They collaborate with producers and academic researchers to design and distribute
environmentally safe products.

SESI develop products that are:
✓ Vegan
✓ Cruelty Free
✓ Biodegradable

One of the biggest selling points for us is that they use a closed-loop system, which means that all of the tubs and containers that we use are collected, cleaned and refilled.

In July 2025 they crossed 5 million pieces of packaging reused and refilled with SESI goods!

You are the winners of August 2026 SESI Refill Poster raffle! 🌟🌟🌟🌟 You had a quiet August but we've seen your figures in September grew by a factor of 7!

Initially, Bude was called Bude Haven. Bude is a sea town located in the north west corner of Cornwall. In old English Bude is 'Bede', which means 'holy man', referring to a hermit living in the cliffside or a rock chapel. And 'haven' describes the small, sheltered tidal inlet and fishing harbor where the River Neet flows into the Celtic Sea. During the 19th century, Bude transformed from an industrious port into a genteel Victorian seaside resort. The Victorians regarded sea bathing as really healthy, believing cold saltwater could cure many ailments. Modesty laws forbid gender integration, so they had in Bude beaches for ladies and beaches for gentlemen.

Bude had a railway boom! When still using horse drawn coach services, Bude was a very exclusive resort, but once the railways was extended to the south westers regions, Bude became a popular destination among the middle class during the late Victorian and Edwardian times.

Like many coastal towns, the people of Bude have united beach cleaners, refill water campaigners, plastic free groups and the Cornwall Wildlife Trust. DYK? Widemouth Bay (Bude) is one of 10 official Blue Flag Beaches, rated by the Environment Agency and Keep Britain Tidy for their long term water quality excellence. Shaftesbury, where this beautiful shop is located, is a Saxon town founded by Kind Alfred the Great around 880 AD, also founding a fortified settlement (burgh) to defend the town from the Danish invaders. In 888 Alfred founded Shaftesbury Abbey, a Benedictine nunnery and appointed his daughter Ethelgifu as the first abbess. Alas, in 1539, King Henry VIII ordered the closure and destruction of Shaftesbury Abbey, during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

Shaftesbury is home to one of the highest hilltops in Dorset. Have you been to Gold Hill? It's a famous, charming, steep cobbled street lined with quaint cottages. And if you make it to the top of the hill you can find the Gold Hill Museum, run by volunteers!

DYK? Shaftesbury is the first town in the UK to formally declare an ambition to become a nature-friendly community, featuring chemical-free public w**d control, wildflower schemes, and the Green Wheel project (wildlife corridors linking green spaces) 🌙🌻💚
