📅 Next MTD deadline: 7th November

If you’re a sole trader or landlord already in Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, your second quarterly update is due on 7th November. That’s under three weeks away.

A few things worth knowing:

✅ You’ll need your income and expenses up to date in your software before you submit
✅ There are no penalty points for missed quarterly updates this tax year, but that doesn’t mean you can skip them, and late payment and your final return still carry the usual penalties
✅ From April 2027, MTD widens to include those with income over £30,000, so if that’s you, it’s worth getting comfortable with it now

💡 New to running a limited company? Here's something worth knowing early...

Did you know how you pay yourself from your own company isn't as simple as just "taking money out"?

Unlike being employed, there's no automatic payslip each month. As a director, you generally choose how to take money from the business — and getting it right from the start can save you a fair bit down the line.

A common approach many new directors use:
💷 A small salary, kept below the threshold where you'd pay National Insurance
💷 The rest taken as dividends, which are taxed differently to salary

It's not one-size-fits-all, and what works depends on your circumstances — but it's exactly the kind of thing worth getting right early, rather than guessing and hoping.

📅 One month to go... the Autumn Budget is nearly here.

It lands on 28th October, and the speculation has already started.

We're not going to add to the guesswork (nobody knows until the Chancellor stands up), but we'll be watching closely and breaking down anything that affects small businesses in plain English, the same day. No jargon, no panic.

📩 Heads up — HMRC is now signing people up for Making Tax Digital, whether they've registered or not.

If you're a sole trader or landlord with income over £50,000 (based on your 2024/25 tax return), you should already be using Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. If you haven't signed up yourself, HMRC has started doing it for you — in stages, from this month onwards.

A few things worth knowing:

📌 HMRC won't tell us if this happens to you — it goes straight to you, not your accountant. So if a letter or online notice about MTD turns up, don't ignore it — forward it to us straight away.

📌 Being signed up isn't the same as being ready. You'll still need compatible software and proper digital records in place — HMRC enrolling you doesn't sort that part out.

📌 Some breathing room: there won't be penalty points for missed quarterly updates this tax year. But late payment and your final tax return still carry the usual penalties, so it's not a free pass.
