Been reading quite a few posts about why people are not making it to interview.

One common theme is an "outdated CV".

Simply put applicant has had one, sometimes two, new roles but they are not updated on the CV which still shows the role they left a year or two ago as their current position.

A lot of recruiters and Hiring Managers will cross reference your CV against your LinkedIn profile, this is where people are becoming unstuck - there is a mis match of the info.
Anything that could be a red flag or requires probing may just knock you out of the running if the advert has prompted a lot of response, one recruiter posted today that they received 400 applicants in a single day for a new role.

The job market is tough in the best of times, right now applicants are up against hundreds, if not thousands, of people for a role.

You need to give yourself the best chance, not shoot yourself in the foot.

Recruitment at Rainbow HR is not just "another" recruitment agency, whilst we deliver a similar service on the surface, we are very different when you strip things back. In fact, we rarely ever to refer to ourselves as a recruitment agency.

The differences?

Our fee for one, we charge a flat 10% - compared to the 15%, 20% or 25% + fees charged by others we deliver huge savings to our clients every week.

Our service is personal, you will only ever deal with 1 of 2 people, no faceless people hiding online behind a corporate identity. We only ever deal with business we would want to work in ourselves.

You are getting something like 60 years of combined service within HR and Recruitment between 2 people, that's an amazing amount of knowledge and experience to tap into.

The service is flexible, if a client needs to speak to us at 11am on a Sunday morning, they can. If a candidate is only able to interview with us at 7pm on a Thursday night, we make that happen.

Plenty of business and individuals give us 5* ratings - take a look here - https://recruitmentatrainbowhr.com/testimonials

Recruitment does not need to be difficult, expensive or stressful. Give us a call or drop a message for a chat or advice.

There is much debate around recruitment fees. Some seem to push the narrative that anyone charging a "low" fee will somehow deliver a poor service.

Not with Recruitment at Rainbow HR, we set our fees at 10% nearly 15 years ago, not because it was "fashionable" or as a one off gimmick, no, because we believe in delivering an above average service for a below average fee = win-win.

Take a look at the growing number of 5* reviews here - https://lnkd.in/e6zn6SDd

Judge for yourself if paying a fair and transparent fee is a "bad" thing.

Recruitment at Rainbow HR is a flexible business, covering the UK and filling a diverse range of roles across many sectors. We finished 2023 with an interesting assignment - finding a new CEO for a Heritage Charity, not something we do every day.

We used a mix of direct search, well placed advertisements and personal contacts to come up with a brilliant short list, ending up with the charity securing their new CEO going into 2024.

"We were recruiting a new CEO for our heritage-based charity in SE London, Tom and Fiona from Rainbow helped us every step of the way, despite our limited funds. Their search process introduced us to a brilliant set of highly qualified and experienced candidates, and it was a difficult choice, but Rainbow provided excellent advice to help us make the final decision. Tom and Fiona’s personal, small-firm approach matched our culture and needs perfectly and ensured that our budget could be met but with a high-quality process. We cannot thank them enough"

Rainbow HR is a versatile and adaptable business, demonstrating resilience as the market changes. This year we have accomplished a lot.
At the outset of 2023, we successfully concluded a major transformation project initiated mid-2022 for Hillingdon Borough Council. Tom spearheaded the recruitment side, while Fiona led the HR components. Following completion in March, Fiona continued with large-scale transformational projects for the council.
Tom continued recruiting for a diverse range of roles across various sectors. From Office Managers to Interior Designers, Site Administrator to Strategic Account Director, and more, with salaries from £23,000 to over £100,000. Our expertise as recruitment experts capable of handling any role in any sector enables us to support clients with diverse hiring needs, eliminating the need to engage multiple recruiters only specialising in single sectors
Our approach involves proactive candidate sourcing/direct outreach, ensuring we present the best talent available. This has proven highly effective, allowing us to demonstrate the breadth of our expertise.
In addition to filling roles, we provide outplacement services to clients We have assisted many individuals in their job searches, offering support ranging from CV advice and interview preparation to coaching and job search assistance. This commitment extends to making introductions to facilitate hires, without charging the hiring business, showcasing our clients dedication to valuing individuals even after parting ways.
We also have a healthy stream of business undertaken by our wonderful consultants – from HR Consultants to assist with a complex project through to trainers and change experts - we can supply staff for short/long term needs or one-off requirements.
In the latter part of the year, we undertook a search assignment for a charity seeking a new Chief Executive (heritage sector). Despite being a new sector for us, we delivered an outstanding shortlist within four weeks, enabling the charity to finalise this critical recruitment promptly.
While we acknowledge we may not fill every role - our success rate exceeds 80% - all achieved on a contingent basis. Contrary to sceptics, we firmly believe in the effectiveness of contingent recruitment and consistently deliver results for our clients.
Rainbow HR operates with transparency and fairness in mind. We charge a competitive 10% fee, unchanged for over a decade. Our commitment to fair and transparent pricing, coupled with a top-notch personal service, sets us apart in the industry.

If you are seeking a recruitment partner that can fill your vacancy at a competitive fee with a highly personalised service, please connect with us. There's no obligation or pressure.

Applying for loads of jobs?

Losing track of who has replied?

One tip we see working well is to track applications using a simple spreadsheet.
Company name, role, salary, contact details, when applied, outcome etc.

It means you know how many "active" applications you have.
It allows you to chase up hiring managers/recruiters.
You can calculate how many applications per interview you are achieving.

If you save the advert/job profile/cover letter (see last weeks post about cover letters) in a word document you can create a hyperlink in the spreadsheet to take you straight to this info instantly, very handy when you get a call about a role and you panic not knowing what role it is - one click and all the info is in front of you.

Cover letters - yes or no?

There is a lot of debate around the use of cover letters when applying for roles.

Here's our take on it.

If asked for one as part of the application process then include one - it will go against you if you do not submit it.

If a cover letter is not asked for there is no need to include one BUT many people do. This could work in your favour.

I have never marked someone down because they included a cover letter, the worst that can happen is it does not get read.

If you do use a cover letter -
Make sure it has additional information on your suitability that is not on the CV (eg you could use it to explain transferrable skills if you do not meet the skill requirement 100%).
Do NOT just copy and paste your CV.
"Dear hiring manager, I am applying for the role of left handed astronaut, please find attached my CV" is NOT a cover letter.

It is a chance to elaborate and really sell yourself for a role, it should be different for every role, generic covers are a waste of time.

Conducting a successful video interview as a job seeker requires preparation, professionalism, and effective communication. Lots of people get this wrong and blow their chances.

Here are some tips to help you excel in your video interviews:

Ensure your internet connection, we**am, and microphone are working properly. Test the video conferencing software you'll be using in advance to familiarize yourself with its features.

Find a quiet, well-lit space with a clean and uncluttered background (consider using one of the backgrounds many programmes now come with). Remove any distractions and let others in your household know you'll be in an interview to minimize interruptions.

Dress as you would for an in-person interview. Wear professional attire that reflects the company's dress code.

Look directly into the camera to create a sense of eye contact. Avoid staring at your own image on the screen. This helps convey confidence and engagement.

Prepare answers to common interview questions and practice them. Be ready to discuss your skills, experiences, and why you're a good fit for the position.
Prepare thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer about the company, team, or role. This shows your genuine interest in the position.

Pay attention to your body language. Sit up straight, smile, and use gestures naturally. Avoid fidgeting and be mindful of your facial expressions.

Demonstrate active listening skills by nodding occasionally and providing verbal cues, such as "I see" or "That's interesting," to show your engagement in the conversation.
Answer questions clearly and concisely. Avoid rambling and stay on topic. If you need clarification on a question, don't hesitate to ask for it.

Let your passion for the role and the company shine through. Employers appreciate candidates who are genuinely excited about the opportunity.

Use the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method to structure your answers when discussing your experiences. Provide specific examples to illustrate your skills and achievements.

If technical issues arise, stay calm and composed. Have a backup plan, such as a phone number to call, in case you experience difficulties with the video conferencing platform.

Authenticity is key. Be genuine, confident, and professional, and let your personality shine through. Interviewers appreciate candidates who are sincere and easy to work with.

By following these tips and practicing your video interviewing skills, you'll be better prepared to make a positive impression and increase your chances of landing the job.

Optimizing your LinkedIn profile is crucial for effective job searching. Here are some top tips to enhance your profile and increase your chances of landing a job:

PART 2

Join LinkedIn groups related to your industry or interests. Participate in discussions and showcase your knowledge by answering questions and providing valuable insights.

If applicable, add multimedia elements such as presentations, videos, or links to projects you've worked on. This can provide a more comprehensive view of your skills and expertise.

Ensure that the information on your LinkedIn profile matches your CV. Consistency is crucial when potential employers compare your LinkedIn profile with your application.

Regularly update your profile to reflect your most recent experiences and skills. An active profile is more likely to appear in search results.

Incorporate relevant keywords throughout your profile. Recruiters often use keywords to search for potential candidates.

Adjust your privacy settings to let recruiters know you're open to job opportunities. LinkedIn has a specific feature for this called "Open to Job Opportunities."

Remember, your LinkedIn profile is often the first impression you make on potential employers. By optimizing your profile using these tips, you can significantly improve your chances of getting noticed by recruiters and landing your desired job.
