Through watery eyes I write......
Several years ago I was contacted by a lady who was enquiring about the possibility of her son volunteering at the dog rescue. He was only 14 and was taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.
Along she came to meet me with this young, gangly boy - all bright eyed and enthusiastic. "I want to be a vet" he said.
"Uh huh" I thought, "lifting some dog crap will get rid of that idea". But along he came and from that moment our unlikely friendship was born.
He dedicated hours to the dog rescue. Within a week he had redesigned our website, the following week he moved all the office furniture around and the week after that had planned a very successful fundraiser. Little smart-ass!! 😉
He asked me to write a reference for him for Glasgow University which I did. I said that Luke was never going to be a good vet. Not in a month of Sundays would he make a good vet.
Contrary to that, Luke McBlain was going to be an outstanding vet. He was going to set such high standards that others would grapple to follow him.
I said in my reference that he would do great things with his life because I know he will. I said that one day I would say proudly "I know him". To this day I still believe every word.
Today, my wonderful friend graduated from Glasgow Vet School.
