A homeowner from Dalston near Carlisle got in touch earlier this year for help with a Chinese Multi-Coloured Slate tiled floor in their kitchen/diner. The sealer had long since worn down and now dirt was getting into the pores of the stone leaving it dull and difficult to clean.

I seldom complete reviews but it was a pleasure to have Chris work on our flagstone floor. This was a key part of our renovation project on a 1890's cottage, with an old dining room being transformed into a modern kitchen, but retaining the cottage's original features.

Chris was going through his busy summer period himself but responded quickly to the initial enquiry. His colleague Alison was also very helpful, and, after both some reshuffling, and the arduous task of a few days work of removing bitumen, as carried out by us, he managed to accommodate us for a few days.

The end result was remarkable. We had also asked for regrouting but the flagstones were first pre-treated and scrubbed meticulously; the floor was then wet vaxed, neutralised and dried, finally sealed and buffed off.

The restorative work done by Chris, unearthing and highlighting the history of the property, was excellent and completed our kitchen project perfectly. He comes highly recommended. Many thanks to both him and to Alison.

The client from Carlisle had been putting off cleaning and sealing their Victorian tiled hallway floor for some time. Having finally decided it was overdue a clean and seal I was asked to pop round and provide a quote for its renovation.

This Oyster Slate tiled floor installed at a property in Grasmere had become dull and uneven in appearance due to ground-in dirt. The floor was subject to heavy foot traffic from a large family and over time the sealer had worn down allowing dirt into the pores of the stone and leaving it looking permanently dull. Unhappy with its appearance the owner requested a thorough clean to restore the natural colour and texture of the slate and then seal the surface to protect it long-term while retaining a natural finish.

If you have a Limestone Tiled floor like the one below at a property in the village of Levens then the following article should be of interest. Natural stone floors like Limestone are porous in nature and need to be sealed to prevent dirt from becoming ingrained. In this case the tiles were last sealed eleven years ago and with the sealer now worn away they were becoming increasingly difficult to keep clean and looked dull and heavily worn.

Recently I paid a visit to a client who lived in an impressive stately home near Bowness on Windermere and had asked for help renovating the Victorian tiled hallway floor. It was a very grand property and the hallway floor mainly consisted of red clay tiles with a decorative cream and black tile border.

The client from Hawkshead had used Tile Doctor previously to renovate a Terracotta tiled floor. Now eleven years later the floor needed attention again and so I went over to the property to survey the tiles and get a good understanding of any issues and requirements.

A client from Kirby Stephen had uncovered a heavily soiled and stained Victorian tiled floor in their hallway. The tiles were clearly quote old and included some lovely, patterned tiles as part of the design which were clearly handmade encaustic tiles that must have been over 150 years old.

A homeowner from Kendal asked me to inspect an old Quarry tiled floor laid in the classic Red and Black Dorchester pattern. Several tiles were damaged or back filled with concrete and so needed replacing, but overall, the floor just required a deep clean and seal.

I suspect something had been dropped on the damaged tiles at some point, causing them to deteriorate over time. With old floors like this, their history is often lost.
