CommsConsult

CommsConsult CommsConsult is a strategic communications consultancy with offices in the UK and Zimbabwe. We work with clients to promote social change

We favour local-level actions and the use of local knowledge, as these are vitally important to communicating development. For CommsConsult, understanding that our clients are governed by hierarchical structures that condition the relationships they have with other actors is critical. We are familiar with working within these structures and transforming them where appropriate, to build a greater l

evel of dialogue into the communication process. We believe that strategic communication empowers development and has rapidly become a highly regarded advocate for the importance of communications in development. We can help you do development better by being strategic, clear and clever about the way you communicate.

Each year, Nieman Journalism Lab asks some of the smartest people in journalism what they think is coming in the new year. Even if you don't read any of the others, this one by Linda Solomon Wood, founder and publisher of Canada’s National Observer is a tribute to tenacity and talent - and good old-fashioned determination.

Take five minutes to read this. We could all do with a reminder not to lose sight of our goals......

"The skills we developed while facing down the fossil fuel industry — persistence through trolling campaigns, converting readers one by one, turning an upstart publication into essential reading — these aren't just about journalism. They're about how to keep building when everything around…

No-one really knows what is happening in Gaza. Israeli authorities have not allowed the foreign press inside the occupied territory, apart from via short media trips embedded with the military. Humanitarian assistance has been made difficult to the point of being entirely suspended.

But research can – and does – take place under these most fragile and contested circumstances. A report published today that draws on survey research with 1000 young people aged 10-24 years in Gaza reveals the extent of trauma inflicted on the young people of Gaza over the last 13 months. Published by Gender and Adolescence: Global Evidence (GAGE) it reminds us - in case we haven't been paying attention - of the negative, long-lasting and traumatic effects of war on ordinary people. This is especially profound for young people, who should be able to look forward to the rest of their lives with hope, optimism and ambition.

We are proud to be working with clients such as GAGE, Mastercard Foundation and UNICEF working towards a better life for the next generation.

Gender based violence has not gone away. One in three women worldwide are experiencing physical or sexual violence, most often by an intimate partner, according to the ILO. International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED)’s film "Meet Mr. Forest" profiled Zheng Fei, a Chinese entrepreneur promoting sustainable forestry in Mozambique. The initiative, part of the China-Africa Forest Governance Project, showcased how responsible investment can improve local livelihoods and protect forests.

By leveraging platforms like Tencent, this project reached 360,000 viewers in China within 24 hours. It aimed to raise awareness about the impacts of Chinese investments in Africa’s forests while inspiring more sustainable practices.

"This has been a really salutory time, including for journalists" says the BBC's Lyse Doucet. "Palestinean journalists have stepped up to cover what is not just a major world story but their own lives. We have depended on them so much. It will live long. the way we have reported and the way we have acted and of course the way the world has acted in this crisis."

Will it though?

Does the world count casualities? Especially those whose names they don't recognise from their own media channels?

As of September 30, 2024, CPJ Asia / Committee to Protect Journalists preliminary investigations showed at least 116 journalists and media workers were among the more than 42,000 killed since the war in began, making it the deadliest period for journalists since CPJ began gathering data in 1992.

Africa is the world's youngest and fastest-growing continent; by 2030, there will be 375 million young people in its job market. However, there is a severe lack of dignified and fulfilling employment opportunities available to them.

CommsConsult forms part of the Youth Employment Evidence and Insights Hub (YEEIH), an initiative led by the Pan-African Collective for Evidence NPC (PACE) which is working in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation to address this emerging crisis.

YEEIH will produce 15 rapid evidence reviews over the next year on a range of thematic areas of youth unemployment to inform Mastercard Foundation programming on the continent.
