This post idea popped into my head when my little one was holding onto my leg yesterday!

Top 5 tips for supporting your child during periods of seperation anxiety (this tips are aimed at typical day to day separation anxiety, not Seperation Anxiety Disorder):
1) Use child friendly language - use terms they understand e.g. I will be back after your nap (rather than I will be back in 1 or 2 hours).
2) Earn their trust - always say bye rather than sneaking off.
3) Stay for 30 minutes (with the person looking after the child) - this will ensure your child is feeling comfortable before you leave.
4) Go slowly - just pop out for a short amount of time for the first attempt.
5) Allow your child to explore independently - designate a child safe room for your little one to explore and play safely if they wish to do so.

Here are my top tips for connecting with your child even whilst they are in their bed...
🌟 Leave a family photo by their pillow
🌟 Leave a cuddly teddy by the door so they know you checked on them when you came up to bed.
🌟Power up their teddy with mummy or daddy cuddles before they go to sleep so they have a way to comfort themselves in the night.
🌟Draw half a heart on your hand and half a heart on their hand. Or a full heart on both hands and they can press it when they want to feel connected to you.

What connection ideas do you use (or have heard of)?

What are split nights?
Split nights are lengthy periods of wakefulness in the night. Some children will appear as though they are ready to start their day whereas others may be frustrated or upset.

The good news is that they are not to tricky to fix... it normally requires some daytime sleep tweaks and time (give it a week for their body clocks to readjust).

To find out a lot more information about how to fix a split night, check out my latest blog...

The Lullaby Trust's 'Back to Sleep' campaign recommend that babies should be put down to sleep, on their backs as the risk of SIDS is higher for babies who sleep on their side or tummy.

In the late 80s around 2,000 babies died each year from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Since the 'Back to Sleep' campaign, SIDS rates have dropped 81%+ in the UK. The latest figures showing that in 2021, 166 babies died from SIDS across the UK (this number is provisional and may change).

This huge reduction is mostly due to researchers in Netherlands and New Zealand who found that babies who slept on their stomachs had a much higher risk of SIDS. Later, similar results were found by Peter Fleming (a professor of the University of Bristol) who carried out a UK based national control study, funded by The Lullaby Trust.

The Lullaby Trust's ABC's of safer sleep for baby's.

Always sleep on baby on their back in a clear, flat, separate sleep space.

The Lullaby Trust recognise that many families are choosing to co-sleep. Check out the Lullaby Trust website for clear guidance on the safest way to do this.

Sometimes tricky naps, bedtimes and night times can be down to under or overtiredness. But which one is it?

Here are a few signs to look out for. It does of course vary from child to child (and there is some overlap) so this is simply a rough guide. It may be worth checking your child's awake windows against a rough awake window guide for their age if you are still unsure.

Overtiredness:
- Your little one either crashes to sleep (in less than 5 minutes) or gets hyperactive/distraught at sleep time.
- Early morning wake ups, false starts, and frequent wake ups.
- Short naps and upset upon waking up.

Undertiredness:
- Your little one is chatty or playful when put down at sleep time.
- Split nights (long awakenings) - is your child getting too much daytime sleep?
- Early morning wake ups, false starts, and frequent wake ups.
- Short naps and content upon waking.

Why is nap 1 a short nap?
🌟 I frequently work with little one's that initially have a short first nap. One of the main reasons for this tends to be that awake window 1 is too short. Little one's often have residual tiredness from the night time resulting in little one's displaying sleep cues before their first nap 1 is due. However, If not enough sleep pressure has built up then this will result in a short nap.
🌟 It might be the way that your little one is falling asleep. If they fell asleep in one way (e.g. in arms) but wake up in a different place (e.g. in a cot) at the end of their sleep cycle. This can trigger a little one to wake up rather than rolling over and linking their next sleep cycle.
