We are proud to announce the sale of a truly historic piece of Cornish heritage – the very last ingot of tin to be smelted in Cornwall, produced from the final consignment of concentrate after the closure of South Crofty Mine in 1998.

At our recent auction, this remarkable ingot achieved a hammer price of £6,400. In a generous show of support, the Wheal Jane Group matched the winning bid, and with the addition of the buyer’s premium, the total raised reached an outstanding £14,144.

All proceeds will go directly to Children’s Hospice South West, a charity providing vital care and support to children with life-limiting conditions and their families.

We are honoured to have played a part in turning this unique piece of Cornish industrial history into a lasting legacy of care, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to the successful bidder, the Wheal Jane Group, and all who supported this extraordinary sale.

The unforgettable Peter Hone sale which we held in 2023, was the contents of Peter’s extraordinary London flat. In this sale we have a small collection of pieces from Peters exquisite Penzance property, which was as much of an interior designers dream at his home in Ladbroke Square.
Here are a few of our favourite pieces, which include a magnificent and heroic marble bust of that great English statesman the Duke of Wellington, some of Peter’s (the master plaster caster himself) own creations, and our personal favourite: a parasol that becomes a private beach changing cubicle, a delightful metamorphic Edwardian invention that harks back to a golden age of deckchairs and donkeys.

We’re delighted to present a remarkable collection of copperware by the master coppersmith Francis Cargeeg.

Born in Hayle in 1893, Cargeeg produced only a limited number of works, choosing to focus on exceptional craftsmanship rather than quantity. He said of his best works, he “loath to see them pass into other hands.” They could take him over a year to make.

A proud Cornish Bard, Cargeeg was also responsible for crafting much of the ceremonial bardic regalia, such as the crowns and staves used in the Cornish Gorsedd.

We are honoured to feature five rare pieces by Cargeeg in our August Antiques Auction.

Lay’s showcases two incredible collections of weaponry in tomorrow’s Antiques Sale. These include some twenty guns, rifles and revolvers, plus other militaria such as powder flasks and swords, the most valuable is a Walter 25 bore double-barrel flintlock carriage pistol with an estimate of £2,500-3000. A later weapon, an 1863 London Armoury Company Enfield pattern three-band percussion rifle, carries a £1,200-1,800 estimate, and our personal favourite, the 18th Century Flintlock ‘’Man-stopper’’ Travelling Pistol by the Birmingham-based gunsmith Thomas Proudman, is estimated at £1,000-1,2000.

The guns are mostly 18th and 19th century, they have fabulously romantic names like Man-stopper or Blunderbuss. The wonderfully descriptive ‘Man-stopper’ is fairly self-explanatory, and a Blunderbuss is a short barrelled, long armed weapon with a flared muzzle that was designed to spray its shot in a relatively wide pattern at close range.

Arms and militaria may not be for everybody but these fascinating collections of weaponry certainly give us pause for thought (who owned them, who used them?) and it’s rather fun to look into the history of some of these extraordinary weapons.
