Navigating the social care system can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re not sure where to start.

If you or someone you care for is living with dementia, here are five practical steps that can help:

1. Know who to contact
For social care and support with everyday activities, contact your local authority’s adult social care team. They can explain what support may be available in your area.

2. Think about the support you need
Before getting in touch, think about what you or the person you care for is finding difficult day to day. This could include washing and dressing, preparing meals, getting around safely or managing at home.

3. Ask for a care needs assessment
Contact your local authority and ask for a care needs assessment. Explain what you’re finding difficult and how it affects everyday life. If you care for someone with dementia, you can also ask about an assessment of your own needs as a carer.

4. Understand paying for care
Depending on your circumstances, you may have to contribute towards the cost of social care. Your local authority can explain what financial assessment may be needed and what support you could receive.

5. Keep a record
Make a note of who you speak to, when you contacted them and what was agreed. If there’s anything you don’t understand, ask for it to be explained, and ask what you can do if you’re not getting the support you need.
