Along with all the current tree planting we have lots of other operations being planned and managed. We still have some areas of severe wind throw from Storm Arwen in December 21. With Timber prices starting to improve a little and timber quality likely to deteriorate we are now getting areas sold and cleared.
This also means we need to do some road maintenance to allow timber lorries safe entry.

Has been a busy winter on several new woodland creation schemes. Big and small.

Always sad when the conditions are so dry that there is a Forest fire. This one near Livingston was a contract job planted by us and now needing a bit of TLC.

Glad to see the weather starting to improve at long last. It has been a long winter in Forestry Terms due to the snow and freezing conditions. More recently it has been impossible to cultivate the ground or plant trees. Even fencing in places has been difficult as the ground has been so hard!! Covid -19 has also held us back obviously due to social distancing and travel considerations.
One of the jobs we are able to do at the moment - we would rather NOT be doing. Trees too have a Covid type problem. Phytophthora ramorum is a tree pest of which there is an imminent danger of its spread throughout GB on movement of infected material or spores on the air. It is killing our Larch trees and is especially bad in SW Scotland. Here our squad of tree cutters are having to fell trees to waste in Ayrshire where infection is present. The trees are felled and cut up then left in situ to kill off the disease. It is a real shame having planted and cared for these trees to then have to clear the site at quite a cost to the owner.
Under the Plant Health regulations 2019 we are required to adhere to the conditions of a Plant Health Notice and carry out the work to a fixed timescale. Here Manager Teddy Ellis Supervises the work to clear all the Larch in this Forest area.

Now that's what I call a Chipper!
Highfield Forestry Ltd have been utilising this great way of removing brash from harvesting sites ready for replanting or the clean ground can be left to regenerate if there is a seed source.
