The Cull is an excellent, award-winning film about managing deer and the highland landscape. Sets out the range of opinions but leaves the viewer to make up their own mind. A great contribution to the debate.

A study trip to Europe’s primeval Forest - eco-tourism; giant oaks, lime, maple, black alder, ash, elm, pine, hornbeam; many of the spruce are dying/dead due to climate change; the wild boar mostly gone due to swine disease, but the bison are on the increase; the kingdom of woodpeckers. An old world in warm sunshine, but its mid-October and a fast changing world.

Its been a busy summer at Islesman working on next years Rural Development Contracts for Woodland Creation, Deer Management and Peat land Restoration. So it was nice to get back to Harris and clear windblown timber on Scotasay. The woodland was established in 1967 and has provided valuable nesting for Herons and Sea Eagles, whilst also providing a wonderful hidden woodland experience, where you would least expect it. This existing woodland has now been expanded with native woodland planting via SRDP funding, with Downy birch, Sessile oak, Common Alder and Scots pine all fairing extremely well after 3 years.
