Urban legend has it that Jimi Hendrix released a pair of parakeets in London in the late 1960s, starting a community of wild parakeets that went on to spread across parts of the UK. 🎸🦜

While it’s a great story, spotting wild parakeets in your vineyard isn’t so great.

Birds can cause havoc in vineyards - eating fruit and bursting berries, leaving grapes more vulnerable to disease. And they’re not the only unwanted visitors vineyard managers need to think about.

So, while we’re happy to admire this visitor at Solom's Court from a distance, we’d rather keep birds - and unwanted insects - away from the grapes.

New to the VineWorks online shop:

Bird netting - 0.9m x 250m roll - Β£95.00 ex VAT
Insect netting with Velcro - 1m x 100m roll - Β£125.00 ex VAT

Both are available to purchase online now, or contact the VineWorks team by email or phone to find out more.

Protect the grapes. Enjoy the parakeets from afar. πŸ‡

"Infilling is a normal part of vineyard life, as there are commonly a few vines that struggle over the season. Put simply, infilling is about filling those gaps with new vines. 🌱

Traditionally, replacement vines are planted as dormant bare-root vines in spring, but potted vines give growers the option to get ahead by planting in autumn.

Will Mower, our Head of Vineyard Development explains why potted vines are a practical option for autumn infilling.in this video.

🌱 Reduced watering - autumn rainfall can help maintain soil moisture, meaning less supplementary watering may be needed.

🌱 Autumn planting - potted vines offer more flexibility, allowing you to choose a planting window that works around harvest and other vineyard jobs.

🌱 Faster establishment - planting in autumn gives the roots time to begin establishing before winter. By spring, those replacement vines have a head start and can get away more quickly alongside their neighbours.

Potted vines are available from VineWorks now.

Got gaps in your vineyard? Autumn could be a good time to fill them. 🌱

Replacing missing vines is an important part of keeping a vineyard productive and consistent, and potted vines offer a practical alternative to waiting for bare-root planting in spring.

Planting potted vines in autumn can mean:

🌱 Less watering - seasonal rainfall can do much of the work
🌱 More flexibility - choose a planting window that works around harvest and other jobs
🌱 A head start - roots can begin establishing before winter, helping replacement vines get away more quickly in spring

Potted vines are available from VineWorks now.
