💷 Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) Changes on the Horizon - What Employers Need to Know

As part of the Employment Rights Bill 2024, the Government is moving to make important changes to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP), with the aim of making work pay and supporting employees more consistently during periods of illness.

📝 Following its consultation, two key priorities have emerged:
✅ Removal of the Waiting Period
Currently, SSP is only payable from the fourth qualifying day of sickness. The proposed change would see employees entitled to SSP from day one of their sickness absence.
✅ Removal of the Lower Earnings Limit
At present, employees must earn at least £125 per week to qualify for SSP. The proposal is to scrap this requirement altogether, making SSP accessible to all employees regardless of their earnings.

📊 The Bill also proposes a revised rate of SSP; potentially 80% of normal weekly earnings, capped at £118.75 per week.
🗓️ These changes are predicted to take effect from October 2025, once the Bill receives Royal Assent. However its important to watch this space!
⚠️ Employers should begin reviewing their absence and payroll processes now to ensure readiness for these upcoming reforms.

At Tamar HR, we’re supporting businesses through this period of legislative change, providing clear, tailored advice to help organisations stay compliant and support their teams effectively.

🚨 Day One Unfair Dismissal Rights: Are You Prepared?

One of the most talked-about changes in the Employment Rights Bill 2024 is the removal of the two-year qualifying period for unfair dismissal claims.
Under the new legislation, expected from Autumn 2026, employees will gain the right to claim unfair dismissal from the very first day of employment.

⚠️ What does this mean for employers?
The two-year qualifying period will no longer exist and therefore probationary periods will become more important than ever, with recommended frameworks moving towards a 9-month period (6 months plus a 3-month extension if necessary).
Dismissals during this initial period will still be open to legal challenge - including for redundancy. Therefore if employers are not completing probationary period reviews now, it is a good idea to start to ensure that it becomes second nature.

👉 Now is the time for businesses to review and strengthen onboarding, probation management, and dismissal procedures to be ready for when these changes come into force.

At Tamar HR, we’re already working with clients to prepare for this significant shift in employment law.

🔍 Employment Rights Bill – When will new laws come into force?

There has been increasing attention around the Employment Rights Bill and the proposed changes it brings, but a common concern we’re hearing is: when will these new laws actually come into effect?

The short answer is – not immediately.

While the Bill outlines significant changes across areas such as:
- Fire and Re-Hire practices
- Unfair Dismissal
- Harassment by third parties
- Redundancy rights
- Bereavement and Parental Leave
- Statutory Sick Pay
- Protections around Sexual Harassment, Menopause, and Tipping

Most of these are not expected until 2026, with only a few potentially taking effect from Spring or Autumn 2025.

⚠️ This uncertainty has created confusion for employers. At Tamar HR, we’re monitoring the timeline closely and helping businesses prepare ahead of time, ensuring policies remain compliant and up-to-date.

Get to know our team!

We pride ourselves on being a personable service that partners with our clients to help them achieve their goals through a trust based relationship.

Therefore we thought it would be great to give you a bit of background to the team that make up Tamar HR and work so closely with all of our outstanding clients.

Our fourth chapter of this edition is Lisa!

"I joined Tamar HR in 2009 and have been navigating the weird and wonderful world of HR for over 20 years. I decided early on to take on a Master’s Degree in Personnel and Development—because clearly, I thought work, study, and life weren’t quite chaotic enough!

My role at Tamar HR is a little different from the rest of the team. While I love working with our clients and providing HR guidance, a big part of what I do involves keeping the business running smoothly behind the scenes. From operations to strategy, I help steer the ship (hopefully in the right direction!).

Outside of work, my husband and I spend most of our time acting as unpaid chauffeurs for our children’s busy social lives. One is a daredevil, flipping and bouncing around the trampoline park with dreams of parkour glory, while the other is far more graceful, training in gymnastics - clearly inheriting all of my elegance! My husband is a wizard with anything engine-related and has even recruited our son into his world of grease and gears.

As a family, we love being outdoors, traveling, and heading off on camping adventures in our campervan - because nothing strengthens family bonds like assembling an awning in the rain!"

The Power of Eight Minutes - Have you got the time?

We’ve all been there – feeling low, wishing someone would reach out. It’s especially poignant today, on Blue Monday, often dubbed the most depressing day of the year. Yet asking for help can feel daunting. Will you seem attention-seeking? Are your problems important enough? Or maybe you’re just overreacting.

And then, a text arrives: “Hey, how are you?”

This is your chance to share. To be honest and seek support.

But what do most of us reply?

“I’m good, thanks. You?”

It’s automatic, isn’t it? We’re conditioned to keep it brief, to avoid vulnerability. But why do we shy away from saying how we really feel?

When I was a restaurant manager, one of the most crucial parts of the customer journey was the check back – It’s the part when the waiting staff pop over and ask you how your food is - “Is everything alright with your meal?” Most customers, mouth full of food, would respond with a polite but dismissive “Yes, thanks.” It felt robotic, transactional.

So, I encouraged my team to change their approach. Instead of a closed question, they’d ask something like, “How are you enjoying your food choices today?” The difference was palpable. Customers lit up. They smiled. Suddenly the staff were no longer just a tool that enabled customers to get their food, but they are now a real person who positively contributed to the customers experience. The interaction became personal and meaningful.

Why am I sharing this? Because when you ask better questions, you get better answers.

It’s not that people don’t want to open up when asked if they’re okay. It’s that the question often feels standard, impersonal and unengaged. Humans crave connection, we are social creatures - it’s a basic need, as Maslow’s hierarchy reminds us. After food, shelter, and health, we seek belonging, friendships, and meaningful interactions.

Yet in our world, dominated by smartphones, the internet and TikTok dances, genuine connection is harder to come by. Even on my commute, as I drive past the bus stop, I see kids texting friends that are standing right next to them. Look up!

This is where the power of 8 minutes comes in. Introduced to me by Simon Sinek[1], motivational speaker and author, the idea stems from a simple study. During the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers explored how brief, regular phone calls affected mental health.

Published in JAMA Psychiatry[2], the study involved 240 adults who received empathy-focused calls a few times a week. Callers, trained in empathetic conversational techniques, asked open-ended questions and gave participants space to share. The results were profound: participants experienced notable reductions in depression, anxiety, and loneliness - within just four weeks.

Inspired by this, Simon shared his own story. A friend of his was struggling with a difficult time and he was upset she hadn’t reached out to him. She expressed however that she did, and as they went through their message exchanges, she had indeed sent him vague invitations for a coffee or catch-up - but he hadn’t realised they were calls for help. To avoid future misunderstandings and to ask for some help, they adopted a phrase: “Do you have 8 minutes?”

This simple question prompts a different response… even if you didn’t know the code word. You’ve challenged the norm and requested a different response. Like my waiting staff’s shift in approach, it prompts a more engaged response.

So, this Blue Monday, harness the power of eight minutes. Reach out to a friend or loved one and ask, “have you got eight minutes?” You might brighten their day, or even transform it.

🌟 Meet the Team: Adam 🌟

I started my HR journey three years ago after a career in the hospitality, retail, and entertainment sectors, where I worked as an operational manager for about 10 years. I’m now currently studying for a master’s degree in Employment Law, which I hope will further enhance my ability to support businesses with the challenges of employment legislation.

Outside of work, I’m incredibly proud to be the manager of an Under-12s girls’ football team at Granby Youth Football Club—a team that my daughter also plays for. It’s such a rewarding opportunity to give back to the community and help shape the lives of others. At the club, we are passionate about introducing young people to football, creating new friendships, building memories, and offering players the chance to be coached and mentored by someone other than a parent or teacher. Our ethos is “every child matters,” and I always aim to provide opportunities beyond football to help the team bond and grow as friends.

In the little spare time I do have, I love heading to Dartmoor with my fiancée (we’re getting married next year!) and our three children. We enjoy exploring the woods, building dens and practising bush craft skills like making fires and purifying water—it’s all about creating fun and memorable family adventures.

Another project I’m passionate about is restoring a 2000 VW T4 campervan. It was a complete rust bucket when I started, but I’ve been cutting out the corroded metal, welding in fresh plates, and giving it a new lease on life. It’s slow progress, but I’m nearly there and can’t wait to get it on the road for the next 20 years of adventures.

Finally, I’ve been learning Spanish for the last 572 days (thanks Duolingo!), which has been both challenging and fun. Here’s hoping I’ll be fluent enough to try it out on holiday someday!
¡Gracias y hasta pronto!

First up, we had Danny Wright, Tamar HR's Managing Director!

"I was born, and grew up in Plymouth before moving to London and then Essex when I was 22. After 10 years working in sales, it was time to move back to Plymouth and change the direction of my career. A role at Tamar HR was the new challenge and I haven’t looked back since.

Three years in now; I have learnt so much, and I have enjoyed every moment whilst doing it.

When Tim offered me the privilege of leading the team earlier in the year, it was an offer I couldn’t refuse.

With the additions of Amelia and Emma this year, the team is growing from strength to strength, and I’m very excited to see what we can all achieve.

Evenings and weekends are for time with my wife Evie and our Labrador Jake, going for long walks and cooking new recipes together. I also play football for local side Plymouth True Blues, and enjoy travelling the world when I can."
