This year has been so unlike the past two years, weatherwise. La Nina is no longer around and we are past the frost date. Yippee! Should be a good year in the vineyards.

Yesterday, at the Unified Wine and Grape Symposium held in Sacramento, there was a strong demand to taste Amador County wines. The tasting line was long but one of the pourers thoughtfully offered Moscato while they waited, so they were happy.

This year's crop seems light to normal, with some varieties (Barbera and Tempranillo) very light. Some vineyards were hurt by hail and a freeze at the start of bud break, resulting in a considerably-reduced crop. The vines are catching up quickly but are out-of-sync. Bloom seemed sporadic and there appears to be considerable shatter. So, we'll see how things look in a couple of weeks.

We've had a lot of late and heavy rains, then hot weather, so the vines are growing like crazy, which you'd think would be a good thing but it's not because the canopies are too vigorous and powdery mildew is rearing its ugly head.
