🔧⛵ Phoebe has had a serious upgrade!

Our training yacht Phoebe is back together and ready for a busy autumn of sailing courses after having a brand-new engine and saildrive fitted and supplied with the help of Darthaven Marina

It’s been a proper team effort getting her there. We removed the old engine and saildrive, thoroughly cleaned and prepped the engine bay, installed new noise-reducing insulation, and then fitted the new engine and saildrive.

While we were at it, we also rebuilt her helm and installed new steering cables, giving the whole setup some much-needed attention - and we did all of this in just 3 days.

And because there’s no point having a shiny new engine in a grubby boat, Phoebe has also had a seriously deep clean and a fresh coat of antifoul ready for some autumn sailing.

Keeping a training vessel working hard takes plenty of effort behind the scenes, but investing in our boats means our students get to train on well-maintained, and reliable equipment.

Are you heading out on the water tonight? ⚓ With the British Firework Championships happening again this evening, Plymouth Sound is likely to be busy with people watching from the water.

A few important reminders before you head out:
• Expect busy waters 🌊 Keep a lookout and give other vessels plenty of space, especially when boats are gathering and leaving after the display.
• ⁠Once the fireworks finish it will be dark, make sure your lights are working and visible before you leave 💡
• ⁠Plan your way home, don’t rely on being able to navigate by sight. Know your route, check the conditions and have your navigation equipment ready 📍
• ⁠Reduce speed when visibility is limited and when you’re operating around large numbers of other vessels 🚤
• Keep your VHF on and stay alert for local safety information.
• Wear your lifejacket at all times!

Last week our Managing Director, Ryan and our Curriculum and Compliance Manager, Rachel, travelled to London to catch up with some of the fantastic employers of our apprentices 💯

It was a pleasure to meet with Bradley and Lilly from Transport for London (TFL) , as well as teams from Harwich Haven Authority, Port of London Authority (PLA), Cory Group, City Cruises and Thames Skills Academy 📈

Visits like this are an amazing opportunity to discuss apprentice progress and ensure we’re continuing to provide the highest quality training and support for both learners and employers ⚓️
