When good people stop trying...

One of the biggest warning signs in a team isn’t always conflict.

Sometimes it’s silence.

People stop contributing ideas.
They stop stretching themselves.
They do what’s required, but no more.
They stop believing anything will change.

That’s often when managers need more support, not more pressure.

Motivation isn’t about being endlessly positive or giving people a pep talk every Monday morning.

It’s about understanding what drives different people, how to build trust, how to recognise development levels, and how to create the conditions where people want to perform.

For HR and L&D teams, this is the kind of practical leadership development that can prevent small issues becoming cultural ones.

The managers everyone remembers...

Most people can remember a manager who brought out the best in them. They probably weren’t perfect. But they knew how to listen.

They gave clear direction.
They noticed effort.
They challenged people without knocking their confidence
They made work feel purposeful, not just busy.

That kind of management doesn’t happen by accident.

It comes from understanding people, recognising what motivates them, and knowing when to adapt your leadership style to the individual in front of you.

For organisations trying to improve retention, engagement and performance, this is where business skills training can make a real difference.

Not because it teaches theory for the sake of it. Because better managers create better working days.

The hidden cost of accidental managers

Some of the biggest performance issues in organisations don’t come from people who don’t care.

They come from managers who were promoted because they were good at the job, but never properly supported to lead others.

They’re expected to motivate, give feedback, build trust, manage different personalities and keep performance on track, often while still carrying a heavy workload of their own.

That gap shows up quietly.

In low confidence.
In unclear expectations.
In teams that wait to be told.
In good people becoming disengaged.
In managers avoiding difficult conversations because they don’t know how to handle them well.

Leadership isn’t just a title. It’s a skillset.

And when managers are given the right tools, teams feel the difference quickly.

One of the biggest reporting mistakes is assuming more detail makes a dashboard more valuable.

Usually, the opposite is true.

The best Power BI dashboards guide the eye, reduce noise and make the next question or action clearer. That is what turns reporting from a technical output into something genuinely useful for a business.

We’ve shared a short article on why advanced visualisation matters in Power BI, especially for teams that already know the basics and want their reports to land better with stakeholders.

A lot of teams have already invested in Power BI.
But 'having' Power BI is not the same as using it well.

There is a big difference between a report that contains data and a dashboard that helps someone make a decision. Layout, navigation, visual hierarchy and clarity all matter more than many people realise.

If your reporting feels functional but not especially effective, this is the bit worth focusing on.

We’ve written a short piece on why a better Power BI dashboard design can have a much bigger impact than simply adding more data...

Most Power BI reports do not fail because the data is wrong.

They fail because the person looking at them cannot quickly see what matters.

Too many dashboards are still cluttered, overdesigned or built for the person creating them rather than the person using them. And that means insight gets missed, confidence drops and decisions slow down.

Good Power BI reporting is not just about building visuals. It is about helping people understand something quickly enough to act on it.

We’ve pulled together a short article on why better dashboard design matters and what makes Power BI reports more useful in practice onn our website...

Eighteen years of running Skilltec!

Countless courses delivered, thousands of learners supported, a business built on expertise, resilience and a lot of hard work.

And after all that time, apparently the secret ingredient was Coca-Cola 🤣

In all seriousness, congratulations to David Bogart on 18 years of leading Skilltec. A huge milestone and a reflection of the commitment, energy and determination it takes to keep building, evolving and showing up year after year.

Here’s to everything achieved so far, and to what comes next.

It's great to get feedback like this!

One of the things I genuinely love about working at Skilltec is that you’re always learning something new. There’s always an opportunity to pick up a skill that actually makes your job easier.

Recently, our training specialist Michael ran a quick 30-minute introduction to Power Query in Microsoft Excel for the Business Development team. I’ll be honest - I didn’t expect half an hour to make that much of a difference, but it completely changed how I work with data.

Before that session, pulling information from different websites meant hours of copying, pasting, formatting, and double-checking everything manually. It was repetitive and time-consuming. After the session, I was able to connect directly to web data sources and let Power Query do the heavy lifting. Now I just click refresh, and all my cleaned, formatted data updates automatically. No starting again. No manual rework. It’s saved me so much time.

What really surprised me was how many different sources you can connect to - over 200. You’re not limited to websites either. You can pull data from platforms like Microsoft Azure, SQL Server databases, SharePoint, Microsoft Dataverse, Dynamics 365, Salesforce, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Azure Data Lake, Azure Blob Storage, OData feeds, REST APIs, JSON, XML, CSV files and more. The possibilities for reporting and analysis are huge.

It’s a perfect example of what makes Skilltec such a great place to work. The training isn’t just theoretical - it’s practical, relevant, and immediately useful. You walk away from a short session feeling more confident and more capable. And that constant development is what really sets it apart!
