We've been a bit quiet on here recently, but we thought it was about time we re-introduced ourselves and said hello to our new followers! Hello! 👋⁣

We are Ian, Owen, Ben, Matt and Jason, the technicians that make up the Fab Lab Plymouth team! We help to run our state-of-the-art Fab Lab facilities based at Arts University Plymouth. The term 'Fab Lab' stands for digital fabrication laboratory, and is an international network of maker spaces which aim to provide access to the tools and knowledge so that anyone can make (almost) anything using digital fabrication. From 3D printing, 3D scanning, laser cutting to CNC machining, we've got you covered 😎⁣

Our team comes from a range of backgrounds and specialisms, such as glass blowing, sustainable design, printmaking and ceramics. However what brings us together is our passion for helping you turn your ideas into reality using digital technology. Our resources are open to businesses, students, and the public so you can unlock the power of making. ✨⁣

After 3 amazing years, it's time to say goodbye to our Smart Citizens Programme! We'd like to take a moment to celebrate some of the highlights of our programme, which opened Fab Lab Plymouth to our local community. A huge thank you to everyone who got involved, from our project partners to all our incredible participants (you lovely lot!). We've been blown away by the talent and passion of all the makers, creators, communities and businesses we've had the pleasure of meeting and supporting.⁣

Introducing Mykhailo! At only 15 years old, Mykhailo recently joined our Fusion 360 training and absolutely wowed us with his advanced CAD skills. An aspiring designer from Ukraine, Mykhailo has been using Fusion 360 since he was 10! ⁣
⁣
Mykhailo successfully passed the Autodesk Fusion 360 Certified User exam with flying colours, adding the accreditation to his already impressive list of achievements, which include two other Autodesk CAD accreditations that he gained whilst studying in Ukraine. ⁣

⛵ Rethinking mooring systems! ⛵

Future Meadows have designed and built this interactive Mooring Systems model for Plymouth City Council, as part of the LIFE Recreation Remedies project. It demonstrates how the chains from traditional mooring systems scour the seabed, removing delicate habitat such as seagrass, and how in contrast Advanced Mooring Systems, with midwater floats elevate the chain above the seabed preventing chain drag below.

Seagrasses are aptly nicknamed “the lungs of the sea” because they can generate enormous amounts of oxygen. A single square metre of seagrass can release as much as ten litres of oxygen a day.⁣
⁣
Projects like Future Meadows help us understand the world beneath our waves right here in Plymouth Sound. Using their new skills developed at Fab Lab Plymouth, Future Meadows have created an immersive seagrass sculpture, educational puzzle and most recently, a new interactive Mooring Systems model.
