What a fantastic first weekend of our 2026 field school season. Thank you too both Llanerchaeron NT/YG and Llanon Cottage Museum for the wonderful guided tours of two very different Ceredigion homes.

This week has flown by, and we're sad to see some of our week 1 participants heading home (we'll keep you updated with progress - don't worry!), but also looking forward to welcoming some new participants for week 2.

Day 4 we were exploring planning and pottery. Great work on site today and a fantastic pottery session in the evening run by Kayne, one of our site supervisors.

Day 3 on site was all about survey.

This year Jen our geophysics expert was training participants in both magnetometry and resistivity techniques. Participants were involved in the whole process of setting up the grids to using all the kit.

We surveyed the area past the existing graveyard and next week we'll be exploring one of the fields to the east of the abbey.

Day 2 of excavations. The rain kindly held off for the day as we continued work in the new trench.

Our wonderful finds officer Dee delivered an introduction to the types of finds we might expect to see at Strata Florida including examples from previous years - from pottery to metal, coins to glassware and tiles to flints… let’s see what this year’s excavations uncover!

A fantastic first day on site for our 2026 archaeology field school.

After participants arrived yesterday from far and wide, today we started excavations on site. For some this was the first time they’d held a trowel and others were eager to add to their skills and experience a new site.

Our new location already seems to be revealing some finds, and we’re very excited for this season’s excavations.

Tools at the ready!

By this time next week, the site will be bustling with 25 participants from across the world, eager to start on our new excavation site.

Yesterday staff were busy preparing the tools and site... as well as having a hard earned cuppa and catch up.
