Last weekend, I watched the film I Swear, and it struck a chord. Its portrayal of society’s misunderstanding of Tourette’s Syndrome reminded me of something I often see at work: how ignorance and bias can unintentionally isolate people.

A mid-sized tech company I worked with recently faced a similar issue. One of their developers, who had Tourette’s, was being quietly excluded from brainstorming sessions because colleagues felt unsure how to respond to their tics. It wasn’t malice—just a lack of awareness.

I ran a Leadership Awareness Workshop focused on:

- Understanding unconscious bias and its impact on team dynamics.

- Explaining Tourette’s and emphasising it doesn’t affect capability.

- Building practical strategies for inclusive collaboration.

Leaders then worked out and set ground rules for better dialogue and open communication. Significantly, the developer felt supported, contributed freely, and helped unlock a key project breakthrough. HR advised me subsequently that team morale and productivity rose measurably.

When the outside world shakes, your workplace feels it too!

Mega-threats—like violent discrimination or high-profile racial injustice—don’t just stay in the headlines. They enter the workplace as stress, fear, and disengagement.

Research (Green et al., 2022) shows that marginalised employees who witness or experience discrimination—even indirectly—report higher anxiety, poorer well-being, and lower focus. For businesses, this leads to reduced productivity, absenteeism, and higher staff turnover.

Forward-thinking companies should take action by:

*Creating safe spaces for dialogue and active listening when staff are affected

*Training managers in conflict resolution and inclusive behaviours

*Linking mental health support directly to external stressors

I swam 3km in Loch Lomond this weekend. It's a fantastic feeling swimming outdoors amongst the hills and blue sky.

Actually it's hard to believe this is something I would or could ever do.

As well as swimming lessons with the Glasgow Triathlon Club (SC049778) the biggest difference for me has been the support of a wonderful bunch of people. Having encouragement, guidance, and a community that cheers you on makes the impossible feel possible. Thanks all!

Just completed a 5K parkrun this morning — legs questionable, enthusiasm intact.

If you haven’t tried it, parkrun is a free weekly event in local parks, open to everyone — from speedy gazelles to gentle strollers. I proudly fall into the “determined tortoise” category.

Running alongside complete strangers feels humbling and, oddly, uplifting. Most people arrive solo, but the community spirit is strong — marshals cheer you on with, “You’re doing great, just a bit to go.” It’s not a race — it’s about your own personal best.

I often laugh, usually while I am puffing and panting and dogs casually stroll past me! But the trees keep me going — their branches wave like they’re cheering me on, urging me to push just to the next tree!

It’s fun, it’s grounding — and it gets me off my backside on a Saturday.
