My first article in Times Higher Education on the use of coaching in HE.
Why not try this:
🔥 Practice active listening
🔥 Ask a question instead of giving an immediate answer
🔥 Use small talk to build rapportFor more tips and examples, check the link in the stories.

You don’t need to always make remarkable things. Often it’s very small changes that accumulate over time and eventually make a difference.
This month in the Portishead Personal Development book club we are reading Atomic Habits by James Clear.
But this idea is not new.
Malcolm Gladwell talked about something he called a Tipping Point. It’s a similar principle - small things accumulate over time to create a big change.
Never underestimate small (sometimes tiny) steps!

Having read the Moroccan Adventures by Alice Morrison as I was preparing to travel to Morocco in autumn, I was so delighted to find out about Alice’s new book, Walking with Nomads.
I have read it half way through and then went on holiday leaving it behind.
Missing it terribly, I was so happy to discover it comes in an audio version, too!
So, now I’m listening to this Moroccan delight.

The book really makes me slow down. It’s like I’m transported to the Moroccan plaines and desert and mountains with the amazing local people who are incredibly warm and caring and beyond extremely hospitable.
Thank you for this super enjoyable masterpiece!

Family life is not glamorous. It’s not what we see in pictures in glossy magazines or in movies:
Family sitting around a beautifully set table, eating, laughing, hugging each other and never arguing. Saying to one another “I love you”, making jokes and supportive comments.
Haha!

But with some luck, a lot of hard work and self sacrifice (only joking), there are these magical moments of serene calm and magical mindful peace.
Putting up a Christmas tree is one of those moments.

But in reality it’s still autumn. Season of harvest, colourful trees and cosy socks.

(Un)accepted and (un)familiar?

I once heard a professor talking about culture. Essentially the definition of culture is.. 'accepted and familiar.'

So, when we start a new job - we venture ourselves into something that is not yet familiar and as a result - not YET accepted.
Transition to a new culture takes time, because to make something familiar - it just cannot happen overnight.
We then move from 'familiar' to 'accepted'.

To everyone moving (or considering moving) to a new culture - be patient. It takes time. And it's normal.
