Ever wondered how a house gets its roof?

Roof day is one of the big milestones on a new build. Once the walls are up to height, the trusses arrive and are lifted into place by crane. Each one is set out, braced and tied into the walls, then the roof is covered and made watertight, so everything inside can carry on whatever the weather does.

This is one of our new builds, from muddy foundations to the finished house.

If you're planning a new build or an extension, give us a call on 01772 717 629 and we'll talk it through.

Every home starts as an empty plot.

Before anyone sees walls, there's digging, foundations, drainage and services. Then the steel and concrete slab. The walls go up course by course, the roof goes on, and it's made watertight. Then all the work inside.

We've been turning plots into homes around Preston since 1981. Thinking about building your own? Give us a call on 01772 717 629.

A look back at one of our new builds when it was still very much a shell.

Could you picture the finished home at this stage, or would you need a little more imagination? 👇

Would you recognise it? This is the same house, start to finish.

It was stripped right back to the structure, new floors went down, new walls were framed out inside, and the whole space was opened up before it was finished, rendered and handed back.

Sometimes the best answer isn't moving house. It's changing the one you've already got.

If you've got a house you'd love to transform, give us a call on 01772 717 629 and we'll talk it through.

Why does an extension seem to take so long?

Most of the time goes on stages you'd never notice. The ground has to be right and inspected before anything goes up. Concrete needs time to cure. The roof, membranes and windows go on so the inside can dry and the trades can move in. Then first fix, plastering and drying time before decorating can start.

Each stage does a job, and rushing any of them is how problems get built in.

Planning an extension? Ask us how long yours is likely to take: 01772 717 629.

What would you turn this space into? 👀

At this stage it might just look like blockwork and concrete, but this is where the ideas start becoming something real.

Every finished room starts somewhere and there’s something satisfying about seeing a project take shape from the ground up.

So, what are you picturing here? 👇

Along with so many many others, we would like to send our sincere sympathy and condolences to the Family and loved ones of Pete Marquis. Rest in peace Pete, you will be sadly missed!

Before an extension looks like anything, it looks like this. The dig gets down to solid ground for the foundations. The steel frame carries the weight of whatever goes on top. Insulation and reinforcement mesh go down so the floor is warm and won't crack. Then the concrete is poured and levelled. And insulation in the walls and roof is what keeps it warm for years to come.

Almost none of it is visible once you've moved in, but it decides how well the finished room lasts.

Planning permission or building regs? They're not the same thing, and it's one of the most common mix-ups we hear.

Planning permission is about what you build: the size, height, how it looks and how it affects your neighbours.

Building regulations are about how it's built: foundations, structure, fire safety, insulation, drainage and ventilation. The work gets inspected at key stages, with a completion certificate at the end.

Some smaller extensions fall under permitted development and don't need a planning application, but they'll usually still need building regs approval. Skip either and it tends to surface when you come to sell.

Not sure what your project needs? Give us a call on 01772 717 629 and we'll talk you through it before anything gets drawn up.

Current status: “Trust the process.” 😂

At this stage, it’s less Grand Designs and more Where did we put that block?

But every finished home has to go through this bit first walls going up, openings taking shape and plenty of organised chaos along the way.

Another past JK Beardsworth project in progress. 👌
