Happy 10th birthday to Sally Your Girl Friday. I cannot believe it! I know, everyone says it, but where have the last 10 years gone. I am incredibly lucky that I’m still able to run a business that I absolutely love and everyday I learn something new from one of my lovely ladies or gents. I now also take Teasel my BT to work with me everyday, and she simply finds the sunny spot and lies down and goes to sleep - only after being given treats of course, she even has her own tin at some of my lovelies homes! 🐾 🍪 Some number crunching for you……combined age of all my lovelies is 1461 years young with an average age of 86. My oldest is 96 and my youngest is 72, but the BEST thing about each and everyone of them is that I still learn things from them. With that amount of years of knowledge it’s hardly surprising. Ok it might take a little longer sometimes for things to be “found and verbalised” from the memory banks however……
So, today for example, I picked up one of my lovely gents who at 94 years young is “my oracle on tomatoes 🍅“ and we spent 2 hours in the glorious sunshine in my garden and greenhouse. I now have a bamboo cane structure in my greenhouse that would happily support a 6 foot rubber plant, never mind the three tommys 🍅 I have! All I need to do now is plant my courgettes, chard, rocket, aubergines, peppers, beetroot and more…….but following the advice given today, I know exactly what to do and even have canes tied as an example of “now you just do this”…..Thankfully I got my spuds in a couple of weeks ago but I was also promoted “you need to earth them up” I know I said, but I haven’t had a chance yet!
I totally understand when people say “how did I find time to work” when they retire, unfortunately, that is not quite on my radar just yet.
Absolutely loving my life, my work and my home, it may have taken me a wee while to get here, but I’m here!
Have a fabulous weekend one and all and for Sally Your Girl Friday, well, it just keeps getting better ❤️xx

Happy 5th Birthday Sally Your Girl Friday – 16th May 2021. It seems astonishing that it has been that long, does it feel like it? Absolutely not! Every day is different, and every day I can make a difference to someone.

It is hard to put into words, my role and how people perceive what I do. When people ask me “so what does Sally Your Girl Friday actually do?” I answer with a variety of things, generally what I might have done that day for someone. Sometimes the reaction is one of surprise, followed with the comment “but that’s easy to do” sometimes it’s laughter, and “really?” other times it’s an understanding, sad look, and “oh, I see”. However people see me, what is most important to me is that I aim to help, to support, and to encourage my ladies and gents, and yes, that can take many different guises. Here a just a few….!

Hanging curtains, painting a wall, batch cooking meals to go into the freezer, accompanying to a doctors, hospital or dentist appointment, doing shopping, taking a lady to M & S for bra shopping (really? Oh yes!) flat pack furniture assembly, defrosting and cleaning out a freezer, collecting prescriptions, helping with technology such as looking at the internet and online grocery shopping, accompanying to Chrysalis, supporting clients and their families through Dementia, taking to the garden centre for a cuppa and pick up some compost, gardening, assisting with sorting personal possessions after a bereavement, personal administration including bank statements and filing, doing Zoom and Facetime video calls with clients and their families, assisting one of my lovely ladies to proof and edit a new authors first book (her grandson), cleaning, helping with the transition from home to care home, and the one thing that has become more vital then anything over the last 15 months – companionship.

My lovely ladies and gents range from 70 to 92 years young, with health issues including Parkinson’s, Dementia, lack of mobility, Diabetes, hip replacements, Arthritis, stroke, cancer, heart failure, and bereavement, so for some, just getting out of bed in the morning can be a challenge!

I asked each of my ladies and gents, or in cases where appropriate a family member, if they would like to comment on Sally Your Girl Friday, and then the rest was up to them. They came in various forms, emails, cards, hand written and typed, but all convey what I mean to them, and I have included them here.

It’s the little things we do that make the difference.

Where do I begin? Three years ago I set up Sally Your Girl Friday, and I can say from the bottom of my heart it has been the most rewarding three years of my life, that has also passed by the quickest! I have looked back through the photographs and my diaries and to say there has been a bit of variety is an understatement, but as they say "variety is the spice of life" .With a combined age of over 1,540 years my ladies and gents have hip & knee replacements, M.S, Parkinsons, Cancer, Dementia, Arthritis and heart problems......what an incredible bunch of amazing people I have met and helped.....
Some of the things I have done have been a one off, such as setting up a wedding venue in Scarborough, decorating the tables and chairs, hanging streamers, organising the sweetie table - it was an absolute joy to do and a privilege to be asked. At the other end of the spectrum, helping to organise and be there as support for a lady at the funeral of a very close family member, again I felt extremely humbled to be asked. Regular requests have been taking one of my ladies to physio sessions - and then doing the exercises with her in her kitchen in between times hoping that no one saw us through the window! Going for walks as a companion to a lady with reduced mobility, taking a lady to Chrysalis in Hexham - a fabulous charity providing friendship, engagement and support to people with Dementia and their families, visiting a pig farm, cooking and baking, meal preparation, shopping, wallpaper stripping, gardening - I have learnt so much about gardening from one of my ladies that I have started my Mums greenhouse up again, and I have so much veg coming I'm going to have to do a lot of cooking and freezing. Working at a 70th birthday party, doing the bar, helping to serve food and then all the washing up and clearing up afterwards, decluttering....one of my lovely ladies had just a few scarves she wanted to sort, furniture shopping for the ideal chair, cleaning, arts and crafts.....and so much more.
Sometimes people have been quite stunned when I tell them some of the things I get asked to do, and they say " but that's easy to do" or "why do they need help with that?" and my response is generally along the lines of......."It's only easy if you can do it, and sometimes it's the little things that we do that make the biggest difference"
Last, but by no means least - a great big THANK YOU to everyone who has supported me. First of all my Dad, without him I wouldn't have been able to achieve my goal, and to all my lovely ladies and gents and their families for putting their faith and trust in me. Here is a very small selection of the photos from 3 years of Sally Your Girl Friday, but please have a look at lots and lots more here on my page....."It's the little things we do that make a difference"
